All the speculation about the fate of Scott Peterson after his conviction for murdering his wife and unborn child got me thinking about the prison at San Quentin. What happens if the "Big One" strikes in that area and those 300+ death row inmates get free?

I remember that quite clearly that tsunami, it is what comes to mind when tsunami comes to my mind.

It was to those villages what Mt. St Helens was with it's mud flow.

Palm/coconut trees swept away like toothpicks.

It was early in the morning if I remember correctly and caught the people off guard.

I cant even start to imagine a 9.5. OMG Duck and Cover would not help in that instance.

It would be like getting hit in an auto accident IMO.

Here are the maps showing the "Ring of Fire" Oceanperch. I shrunk the big one down a bit for those with dial-up connections.

It would be devastating that's for sure.

If a large enough quake knocked down walls leaving openings for them to escape, the discovery of casualties under the rubble would be more likely than escaped felons.

It would be an awful day for the guards and staff on duty. Despite their jobs to contain the inmates, their human compassion to protect their charges would probably override their own instinctual self protection.

USGS has begun posting Mt. St. Helen's earthquakes on the USGS site. There have been a few 3.0 and above quakes in the past couple of days. Have you felt any of them? What is local media saying about the increased activity?

I grew up in Lae, Papua New Guinea. My family was there for six years from 1966 to 1972. We often experienced earth tremors and quakes. It is a very seismically active area of the world. I used to enjoy exploring in the jungle with my older brother and finding old Word War Two airplanes with Japanese and American insignia on them.

That must have been quite an educational experience, Bandaneira. Did you also find unusual insects, animals and plants on your explorations?

Yes. My brother, who is ten years older than me, used to catch the most beautiful butterflies. He would then use some formaldehyde and pin them in a hand-made glass and wooden case. I was a bit perturbed by the capturing of the butterflies, but he was my big brother so I just went along with it. We used to have a real live python in the back-yard. It could be seen at night and was totally harmless. The Bird of Paradise was much harder to find, and we managed to see one of them once on a trip up to Weewak. The rain in that part of PNG was very reliable. at two in the afternoon it would pour for about an hour an then stop. The insects post rain would make a hell of a din. There was no television in Lae at the time and I believe that was a very good thing for me. I have always liked the tropics and adventure.
