Thing is, Spurrier isn't all *that* great an Xs-and-Os coach. He's good, but at Florida, he got dropped into a perfect situation in that he was in a state brimming with talent, and he could recruit. He's going to have a lot harder time getting people to come to Columbia...I don't think he'll be any worse at it than Lou, but I don't know if he'll be any better. USC's problem has always been getting talent.
But maybe I'm just bitter because the Ol' Ball Coach ran my Redskins into the ground last year. In any case, a lot of 'Cock fans are going to have to take back some nasty things they said about Spurrier now that he's gonna be wearing a maroon visor!

If ewe can believe it! I didn't suffer the farm routine though - i was int'l business accounting.... we looked down on them udder-pullers!
Mark this down as an ironclad guarantee: Spurrier will have NO trouble recruiting to Columbia. The players will flock there to play for him and USC will be a powerhouse within five years. I detested the guy for years but finally came to admire him as it became obvious that he's the best college coach in the history of the game.
And BTW, on the day I heard he was going to the NFL, I said, "It'll never work. Two or three years max." An NFL coach just doesn't have the control that a college coach does, and that's such a huge part of Spurrier's success.

From Steely Dan, "They call Alabama the Clempson Tide"
When Danny Ford was the football coach some of the other ACC teams complained that Clemson played too "rough". Ford's response was, "Football is a contact sport". LOL!
BTW, the Princeton Review ranks Clemson #5 in "Jock Schools", behind Florida, Penn State, Florida State, and Notre Dame. See:

Mark this down as an ironclad guarantee: U of Coot ( South Carolina ) will become a "Murder She Wrote" for college coaches. Where the has beens go to retire.
Ummmm...all things being relative...shouldn't that be "Crimpson"?
;o)
The University of Southern California was founded as such in 1880, while South Carolina College wasn't renamed to the 'Univerity of South Carolina' until 1906
How long has the University of Kansas called itself "KU"? My alma mater, Kutztown University (between Allentown and Reading, PA) changed its name from Kutztown State College in 1983 (and calls itself "KU"). If the legal eagles, er, Jayhawks in Lawrence serve a cease and desist notice on Kutztown over the use of "KU", I wouldn't mind BION. Why I wouldn't, I don't know.
ff (Kutztown '84)
I beg to differ as my class ring from the real USC in Columbia has 1805 on it. USC was old before Southern Cal was thought of, no matter what title it goes by.
As it stands USC is rather conservative, or it was when I got my Masters in '85
Dog Gone - please see post #20
Holt deserved a better ending than his players gave him. No respect for themselves, or their coach.
Eccl,
I disagree with you on this one. USC, as in U of S.C., a soverign state of this here great Union versus a southen california, PART of a state. Let them snicker, just tell them about The game between the U of sc vs. The U of S.C., when the Cocks beat the tar out of them wanna be usc. I still have a t-shirt with the saying, The USC.
On the serious note, I do feel bad for both clems'son and The USC, but so glad that they both had the integrity to turn down bowl bids, even the toilet bowl bids.
Gamecock?
Gaaaaaammmmmeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!
Isn't that officially Kutztown University of Pennsylvania?
It signifies that I have been working to long. It says 1801 with the date 1985 on top.....I need a vacation :)
In a head to head matchup, the Trojans would lubricate the gamecocks.
The sure beat the 'Canes. But if neither accepts a Bowl bid, I think my beloved MAC will get an extra bid or two. Those schools need exposure.
He shoulda won more national titles at UofF, but he's still awesome.
ANNOUNCED LATE THIS EVENING:
The University of Central Florida has announced this evening it will not take part in any bowl games this bowl season, as punishment to the team for not winning any football games this year, going 0-10.
