"Harvard" and "Republican" in the same breath. Who'd a thunk it!

What is more surprising--a Harvard Republican Club or Texas Aggie Democrats?

"Cecil Rhodes is rolling over in his grave!"

He started spinning when they gave a scholarship to one unprincipled young slimeball by the name of...wait a minute...oh, yeah, I remember now: Billy Jeff Clinton.

LOL! Maybe the lesson here is "Spend your money while you're alive!"

I have very limited respect for "Rhodes Scholars".

Clinton, Robert Reich, Paul Sarbanes, Franklin Raines, - the list goes on.

At Oxford, she will do the D.Phil. in Biochemistry

Is Dr Phil a player or what?

Former leaders in the Harvard YR's include William Rusher, Don Hodel, Grover Norquist, Bruce Chapman -- all prominent conservatives, RR appointees, etc.

I'd have to say they're equally shocking, being an Aggie. Not many dems at A&M from what I hear (gratefully).

About the time he retired, Tommy Franks gave a speech at Texas A & M which was shown on C-SPAN. It was in a large auditorium which was packed. Franks made a point of recognizing the two Democrats in the room.

I think George Stephanopoulos is another example. I don't think well of the gaggle of Rhodes Scholars who became "Friends of Bill" (I think there are some others besides those mentioned so far). On the other hand, I have known three Rhodes Scholars personally and they were all fine people...but none of them were politicians.

Eugene Shenderov, Brooklyn, is a senior chemistry major at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. Eugene plays varsity tennis, is president of the chess team, and volunteers as a tutor. He left his native Ukraine for the United States at the age of six to receive treatment for leukemia acquired as a result of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in 1986. He was homeschooled during elementary school because of his immune system deficiencies. At Oxford, Eugene plans to do a D.Phil. in immunology.

A sickly Jewish kid, now a varsity tennis player AND chess geek. What an intersting story. This guy I'd like to meet!

I thought this one was very impressive too, but how do you know that he is Jewish? Is Shenderov a Jewish surname?

Sounds like a Russian Jewish name, yes.

He was the former head of the Aggie Democrats and according to several people I know, he's a flaming liberal and a major a-hole.

While not nearly as large as the conservative groups on campus, the Aggie Democrats are revered by the faculty & administration and the local media. The YCT are vilified by the administration and always just one step away from being booted off campus. The Aggie Democrats are just as whacked as their comrades on DU.

It doesn't say anything about his political views. And honestly, I don't really care, I just think it's a remarkable story...coming from the Ukraine, homeschooled with a deadly illness and then being a tennis AND chess star. If him being a Dem in his youth trumps all of those accomplishments, then I don't believe in the same things as you.
