We'll get a more conservative Senate in January. There was no reason for the House to accede to a bad bill when it can get a better one in 2005.

Would this bill create an intelligence czar?? If so, I would oppose it.
DCI Goss needs to clean house at the CIA and Sec. Rice needs to clean house at INR.

"House Republican leaders blocked and appeared to kill a bill Saturday that would have enacted the major recommendations of the Sept. 11 commission"
Excellent. Come back after the first of the year and pass a better bill with more restriction on immigration.

Absolutely! This must have been a last gasp by the left wing to weaken us again.
The fact that the NY Slimes wants this bill passed, is all that we need to know that it is bad for America and our Military Warriors.

Pat Roberts and Jane Harmon both just on Fox News Sunday questioned by Chris Wallace about the failure of the bill. Neither touched on the immigration issue. Can't blame Sensenbrenner et. al. for killing it. When are they all going to wake up to this problem ?

All you have to know about this bill is this:
Today, the House Republicans missed an opportunity to make the American people safer, said Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the House Democratic leader. "Their inability to overhaul our intelligence system is a staggering failure.
Looks like the Democrats in Congress are going to have a lot of staggering in their futures.

The bill would have forced the Pentagon, which controls an estimated 80 percent of the government's $40 billion intelligence budget, to cede much of its authority on intelligence issues to a national intelligence director. The way this is being discussed in the MSM, most people would have little idea that it also involves potential shakeups at NSA, NRO, DIA, and every other military intel agency (IIRC, 26 different agencies). It's being spun - one would guess intentionally - as some vague cleanup at the CIA. Nothing could be further from the truth.

They said Mr. Sensenbrenner had been adamant that the bill include a provision to create federal standards for drivers' licenses to prevent them from being issued to illegal immigrants, a move widely criticized by civil liberties groups as a step toward a national identification card.
THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When will this US gov get a line-item veto for mostly good bills... which have really bad baggage attached?

We'll get a more conservative Senate in January. There was no reason for the House to accede to a bad bill when it can get a better one in 2005. Agreed in principle. But these changes you're hoping for can be easily scuttled if people who oppose these measures soften their support before January (or whenever) next. Instead we need to pour on the pressure even more between now and then. Write and call and fax ever more and etc.. I try and remind my elected's that they have no duty nor responsibility to the illegal's or their lobbies but rather to those of us who actually are voting constituents of theirs with networking assets in their districts.
I also write to those who are actually fighting the good fight and thank them for their support.

The control of intelligence product by one individual gives that individual enormous power. Remember that Beria was the most powerful person In Stalinist Russia. Having multiple intelligence agencies splits power and creates checks and balance. I have concerns about vesting to much power in one intelligence agency or individual. Am I the only one who has this concern?

seantors are usually just a collection of overly odorous gas bags with no thoughts of the good of the nation. Like the dnc/rnc they have only one objective --- more money for themselves.
