But the jury acquitted him of attempting to use a destructive device in a crime of violence - Molotov cocktails - a charge that carried a sentence of at least 30 years in prison.

I wonder why. The punk should get the 30

According to the FBI, ELF is the #1 domestic terrorist group.

Oh yeah. ALF, ELF, and PETA are the biggest domestic terrorist group. It would be horrible if we overlooked them when we fight terrorism abroad. They too need to be destroyed, like Al-Qaeda.

There's already a pre-existing law to deal with these types of terrorist organizations.

It's called the RICO statute. Unfortunately, I don't think the district attorney will be utilizing it in this case.

"Will CalTech DENY him his doctorate? They should. And I believe they have that right."
Well, normally one has certain number of years to finish the doctorate (something like 5-6, with short extensions on case-by-case basis). I doubt CalTech will put him on academic leave of absence, and I doubt he'll be in a position to finish his degree requirements from the prison.

"As proud as he is of his son's success in college, Dr. Cottrell recalls the embarrassment he felt about sending him to the Utah school. "I heard other parents saying, my kid's going to this private school, or that big- shot school, and my kid was going to some place no one ever heard of in Provo"

Dad sounds like a true liberal. Throw money at a probelm he caused and then be ashamed of the son because he didn't meet his expectations. What a loser.

This is a real kicker:

" Cottrell's attorneys asked for the five-year mandatory minimum sentence saying that their client has Asperger's syndrome -- a form of autism marked by impaired ability to understand social situations."

This guy was recently sentenced to 100 months in federal prison.

No parole in federal prison, he'll do the whole 8+ years.
