Now of course we will hear from the "But if he does anything wrong we will have him removed as chairman", as I see it most so called Republicans have the backbone of a jelly fish. It's this very sort of attitude that gave us CFR. But that's ok, come next election cycle the ones that voted for Specter will be looking elsewhere for work.
Not that I expected the Vote Whores to do what we elected them for anyway. This on top of them wanting to raise the Debt. ceiling tells me all I need to know about most of the idiots in power.

Sen. Santorum has been enormously helpful," said Specter Tuesday. My '08 ticket was Bush/Santorum. Who's left?

My number one priority in the next two years is to reelect Sen. Santorum." Who is your enemy's friend?
To: GeneralHavoc
What did santorum and spectre do for Bush anyway? Did they work as hard as they could in PA? I think not. Santorum better be careful...if he wants to remain in politics this is NOT the road to take.
To: GeneralHavoc
Notice to all Republican Senators: You better hope that Specter toes the line, or you will have voters so pissed off that none of you will ever win re-election.

I thought Santorum was a strong pro-lifer?

One of the facts of life. Politics is the art of the possible. Santorum has not betrayed anybody. He knows what he needs to do to accomplish the best possible outcome for the election of conservative judges. Specter has been irretrievably outed and the onus is on him to support Pres Bush. If he slips up, he will be out of the chairmanship as quickly as he got in.

Look everybody calm down! You know that Santorum is a stand up guy. I'm pissed that Arlen is going to be the chairman but politics is the art of the possible. Live to fight another day and don't undermine a good man like Santorum. I think he's only doing what he has to do.

This is why Republican Governors remain the best source of future presidents.
We get to see WHAT AND HOW they'll govern.
Forget the Senate. It's a bunch of compromisers who exalt that very thing.
Let's find a governor with backbone and back him.

I would not call that a back stabbing. He is calculating, right or wrong, that it will be better to work with Specter than have him as a mad adversary. That, of course, hinges on whether Specter ultimately can be trusted.
If Specter truely is with us, then he will lend a perception of moderation in any heated confirmation hearings and will be an important vote in favor of any nominee to the bench. If he can not be trusted, well, then he will be the back stabber. But Santorum is not a back stabber in my opinion. He has been an excellent Senator.

Any talk of pulling the rug on Santorum is nonsense. Pennsylvania is a blue state just like California, believe it or not, and some here would throw out Santorum? I'm sure Gov. Rendell is licking his chops.
To: GeneralHavoc
Let's not make too big a deal out of this. Santorum is practicing what's called Senatorial courtesy. It's against custom to campaign against one's home state colleague in the general, and unheard of to oppose him in a priamry.
There is an upside to this. Even if Specter does get the chairmanship, he will be beholden to Senate conservatives who gave him a chance to prove his loyalty. He will probably support a conservative nominee, and possibly use his influence with 'Rats to win a few crossovers.
To: GeneralHavoc
Also, Orrin Hatch has apparently come out in support of Specter for Chairman.
