"He's savin' up for college. Gonna be a doctor."

LOL, LOL!!

I forgot about that one.

Gomer: "Nothin' wrong with that engine. She's smooth as seeyilk."

I watched it when I was kid and it was on prime time. I watched re-runs in the '70's when an old friend would call me after it was over and start off with: "did you see that!?"

I watched it occasionally in the '80s.

In the late '80s and into the '90s I was a regular on TBS at 6:30 with beer in hand. Nothing, Nothing, Nothing could take the edge off the day like that show. I would literally lose myself somewhere by that fishin' hole.

Calling it a night. This has been a riot.

Be back tomorrow.

The Mendlebright Sisters!

Mr. Tucker (paraphrase): "This is sheer idiocy! You people are living in another world! Men are orbiting the earth! International television has been developed! And here a public utility is being tied up because two old women's feet fall asleep!

This episode, "Man In A Hurry", is consistently ranked as the fan's #1 favorite, and deservedly so.

(Trivia Note: Barney's land lady was also named Mrs. Mendlebright.)

Barney, drunk on hard cider, talking to Andy: "She used to wash my hair."

Believe it or not, here in California you can buy an Andy Griffith DVD with three-four episodes at the 99 cent store.....

That's probably what they're worth. Those are the cheap-o public domain episodes that anybody could throw together on a disc or a tape. (see posts #21, 23 & 24 on this thread for further information) This new DVD package is the only OFFICIAL collection so far. Big improvement in quality.

>>>>I will only buy the ones with Barney in them. When he left the show went downhill.

Can't deny that. Seasons 1-5 are packed full of Barney--these are undeniably the best shows in the series, the classics. Seasons 6 & 7 contain sporadic appearances of our favorite deputy, now a detective in Raleigh. But Season 8, the final and most unpleasant of the series, has no Barney at all (no Floyd either). Just Howard Sprague, Emmett the Fix-It Man, and Goober. Blaaaah.

I hate to admit this, but my introduction to southern culture came via the Dukes of Hazzard.

I'm ashamed to say that I used to watch that show religiously as a kid. Every Friday night, there I was in front of the TV, singing along with Waylon Jennings: "Just some good ol' boys ..."

But I've watched DoH recently and I can't believe how horrible it is! So STUPID! The only thing that makes the show worth watching are Rosco, Boss Hogg and Uncle Jesse--Oh yes, and Daisy Duke (drooling).

Andy Griffith has always alluded to the fact he had "problems" during the later seasons and I have always assumed it was alcohol.

You might be right. If you look at him closely in those color episodes, you'll notice that his eyes sometimes appear to be bloodshot.

You're also correct that Andy is different in the color shows--especially after Floyd left. He's no longer the quick-witted country boy. Instead, he's the easily-irritated old man. Painful to watch.

Just like I never got into The Beverly Hillbillies.

I didn't like the show when I was younger, but now I love it. If you haven't seen the Hillbillies in a while, then I urge you to give them another chance. IMHO, Jed Clampett is a model of true Conservatism, and that's impossible to find on TV nowadays.

When he was tipsy on hard cider it was "Brendlemight". :)

"One, a guy comes into town, he's got NO job, NO place to live, and he moves in with Mrs. Brendlemight."

And high maintenance

Darn right! If Andy stepped an inch outta line, Crump's jaw would start clenching and it would stay clenched until Andy completely emasculated himself and begged forgiveness. Ugh.

Charlene Darling? Hmmmm, I don't know ... She's a little bony for my tastes. I prefer Thelma Lou or Nurse Peggy. Why Andy didn't latch onto Peggy, I'll never understand.

Oh yeah ... Peggy! Remember Floyd called Andy "Barracuda" when he thought Peggy was fishing for a husband ... ? "See ya later ... Barracuda!"

Charlene seemed like a wild woman ... my kinda gal! ;)
