Except the "authority" the FreeRegimentists here are so concerned is being defied is that of educators, arguably the group with the least understanding of responsiblity on the planet, who lack the sense God gave to a sheep.

Raising kids to obey their ridiculous rules without question will only raise a generation of socialists.

Nothing wrong with the girl and her parents trying to challenge this. She needs to do as she is told in the meantime or accept the consequences though.

There are really two issues rolled into one here, and various posters have addressed one or the other individually. Both are valid.

The first is the politically correct, half-baked educational theories which have turned public schools into academies of mediocrity and lunacy. The second is the rebellious, disrespectful, authority-hating adolescent swill that we are currently nurturing in our homes and schools and their dysfunctional parents. In summary, I agree with those who say the school is stupid and with those who say the kid is a brat and her parents need a good shaking.

My wife works in a public Middle School here in Georgia and I can't really find the words to describe the horror I feel at some of what she tells me each day. There is an insistence on certain idiotic, politically correct rules, contravention of which will get you suspended. At the same time, really important issues such as good manners, good behavior in class, respectful behavior toward teachers, no foul language etc., are glossed over. Doing gymnastics would be one such example of these idiotic rules.

With respect to enforcing obedience in the children, it has to be said that the parents are a major part of the problem. Almost without exception, any rebuke or punishment enforced on the child will invariably bring irate parents to the school using language and behavior which makes the child's pale into insignificance. All furious that their little angel has been singled out for chastisement. My wife has recounted incidents where the parents themselves have been arrested by the Public Safety Officer in the school and taken away in a paddy wagon to the local lock-up, such was their conduct and threatening behavior toward the Principal or her deputy. Many teachers and principals simply give up.

So a pox on this school described in the article and the kid and her crazy parents.

I'm 50 and I can still do a cartwheel (at great risk, however!).

Yes, we should always obey every single rule made by every single authority. It is always wrong to break the rule. Regardless how ridiculous or ad hoc it seems, no rule can be challenged. We must embed this idea in our children at all costs. </sarcasm>

My two y/o grandson was jumping on my bed the other day. I have ceramic tile on the floor. (hard, unforgiving stuff) Anyway, he's really good at running and jumping. He's had a lot of practice. He decided to invoke his right to individuality and ignored me telling him to stop and continued. He took standing in the corner like a little man:')

Yes, we should always obey every single rule made by every single authority....

If you can make up and enforce enough rules on the youth of today, no matter how idiotic they are, they'll be very obedient when they are older!

To some degree, I agree with you, but the rules are idiotic. I was her age only 15 years ago and we used to play tackle football in the schoolyard and we were no worse for the wear.

The real root is an overly litigious society.

PC crap like this will be the ruination of us all...

Indeed. Excellence is scorned. Enemies appeased. All in the name of PC; it's a genuine scourge.
