In one of the most dramatic clashes Wednesday, snipers fired on U.S. and Iraqi troops from the minarets of the Khulafah al-Rashid mosque, the military said. U.S. Marines called in an airstrike, and an F-18 dropped a 500-pound bomb on the mosque, destroying both minarets. Insurgents in streets around the mosque kept up the fight, pinning troops down on a rooftop.

One down. How many more to go?

At least 13 U.S. soldiers and Marines have been killed so far in the Fallujah operation.

It should be emphasized that, while tragic, the loss of 13 soldiers/Marines in offensive operations where the enemy is being driven & killed is far better than losing a similar number to a car bomb at a static checkpoint.

Of course, the reporter wouldn't know that, would he...

A typically NEGATIVE report from the MSM. I surprised our troops weren't accused of killing babies, cutting off heads, raping and pillaging ... reminiscent Jenjiss Kahn...

Yeah, it can't just be "wounded" or "wounded troops", it has to be as maudlin as possible while still keeping some sort of long, thin tether to the appearance of objectivity. The only thing missing is gasps and sighs with forearm to forehead.

And that's not meant to be a reflection on your bump. Your bump was also a great one! :-)

But seriously, God bless our troops. Keep them and protect them.

The numbers do not add up. Over 100 US wounded.

Only 600 dead. We bomb them. We hit them with artillery.
We fire rockets at them. We fire M1A1 and Bradley cannon at them. We fire machine guns at them. We have snipers shooting them.
We have the best trained marines and soldiers shooting them.

And yet we have only killed 600 and suffered over 100 wounded!

Bull S**t!

I wonder what the soldiers (who are defending this guy's right to be ignorant) would say to a reporter who portrayed them to the world as bloodied and broken?

They're probably giving a conservative estimate, based on bodies actually seen. I'm sure there are large areas of the city that have been hammered but have no GI boots on the ground to see the bodies yet. So I'd say it's probably at least double that.

Well, if you allow for a similar 1:10 killed/wounded ratio to the enemy, then it would follow that some 4-6 thousand of them have been wounded. Given that our wounded soldiers receive very fast medical care (key to high wound survival rate), while the wounded enemies do not, it further follows that there will be way more than 600 of them dead in a short order even without further hostilities.

Good I'm happy to see we have moved past that squeamishness about blowing up mosques. If they continue to use them as bases of operation then there may not be many left when things are finished.

"Commanders had said before the offensive began that 1,200 to 3,000 fighters were believed holed up in the city. But the speed of the U.S. advance has led some officers on the ground to conclude that many guerrillas abandoned the city before the attack so they could fight elsewhere."

How could that be if they have cordoned off the city?
