I resist the notion that just because there's a problem then that means something has to be done about it. Some things, in fact most things, have to be taken in stride.

Terrorism, the federal debt, a rotten education system - those are some things that we have to do something about, not obesity, or smoking, or any other willfully self-inflicted harm. Personal responsibility and freedom, even the freedom to make a bad choice, are more important than fixing these so-called problems.

We must stop allowing our freedoms to be taken away in the name of safety or health or because "it's for our own good".

Actually, I have laughed at these articles until I was sitting in my car outside a local elementary school one day. I was shocked to see so many chubby kids walking home. It seemed like every fouth kid was overweight. I was stunned, really.

Poverty does that to children, they cannot afford to join LA Health or any other workout mill. Tragic....perhaps we should have a government physical excercise program that really works. We can call it a Gulag.... where all the children work in the beetroot collective and indulge in their favorite snack beetroot soup.

we MUST find those people (or entities) that are holding people down and forcing all that food down their throats.

Self Control is out of Control.

Obesity is just a symptom.

The global epidemic of obesity is completely out of control...

Peoples' weight was supposed to be controlled? By whom?

Wondering if this will send obese libertarians over the edge. (lol)

If ya have a rendezvous with one of those babes, ya git a barrel of Gold Medal flour, and... (nevermind, old high school joke.) If anyone wants to know the rest, send me a FReepmail.

"As one who conquered obesity in 2003 (and I shall continue to fight it off for the rest of my life),"

Why would *I* aspire to un-obesity. I don't have a problem with being quite pudgy. I buy large clothes and eat lots of food, thereby contributing to the economy, am really old but really healthy, clean heart and support staff, feel great but don't plan on even *watching* a marathon (gotta be nuts to run 'till you want to die).

On the other side of this coin, the only friends I've had that died young really looked good. All trim and healthy. Annnd... What do you do *if* you get really sick, like a debilitating disease? You certainly don't have any reserves to fall back on that will keep you alive 'till the 'drugs' take effect... My mom, dad and grandmothers all, were chubby 'till their mid eighties, then started losing weight, then died. Now, using lib logic, I directly contribute their untimly deaths to not having enough fat to protect them. My dad would heartily agree.

Ah, to be underfed or over fed, that is the question. If it's all the same, I'll take the 2nd.

I just turned 41. 5'11'', 169 lbs. 31 in waist. I have abs (ok not a 6 pack but definitely a 4 pack), bench 225 (ok- one rep, but still!) and am now closing in on a sub-20 minute 5k.

Last year at this time, I weighed 205 and looked and felt like sh*t.

I lost the weight in about 4-5 months with a high protein, low fat, low calorie (cut beer intake massively) diet along with lots of free-weight training and running to keep muscle while losing lard.

It can be done. Whether it can be maintained is something I don't know yet. Tell you in about a year.

Congratulations!

You are so right-personal responsibility is the only solution-if people are stupid enough to eat themselves into into clothes manufactured by Oscar de la Tenta, it is no one's business but their own-sooner or later maybe these idiot socialists will realize that you can't save people from themselves, and maybe that is how God intended it to be.

We made the committment to an Atkins friendly fresh food diet several years ago, and although we weren't overweight, we decided it was just a better way to eat, considering that our ancestors didn't live on chicken strips and beef covered with 1/2 an inch of breading and deep fried in tropical oils, donuts, pasta and canned vegetables. It takes a bit of extra time after work to cook a meal with fresh meat, veggies and salad but it is worth it.
