We're still paying attention, though.

Some issues are too disgusting to talk about

This race is all about THREE Supreme Court appointments.
This nation is hanging onto the rim of the swirling liberal toilet bowl by its fingertips and these appointments will determine whether we will finally climb out in triumph or get flushed away like a foul turd into the sewer of socialist Democrat mediocrity.

Well said! Further, the liberal represents, to a certain extent, the ineffable scent of these times! ;-)

Mr. Zogby is wrong. Social issues will play a pivotal part in the Midwest States of Iowa, Ohio and Wisconsin. I dare say they will favor Bush over Kerry. Kerry's gaffes about Lambert Field and the Michigan Buckeyes won't help either.

You are probably correct. However, it is true that neither candidate has talked much at all about these issues.

What's James Sterngold's track record on the cultural war? Anybody know?

"cultural values" would play a dominant role in the presidential race

Existing cultural values are mostly shared by both Liberals and Conservatives and neither is interesting in hearing about making large changes in that realm. "Cultural values" are not resonating in the campaigns, so there is not much to campaign on using cultural values any different than what we already know so well they are transparent.

Nice analysis but wrong. Cultural issues are resonating in certain areas of the country and will continue to. For instance, Kerry will lose West Virginia despite broad advantage in dem registration strictly because of cultural issues.

Homosexual marriage is on the ballot in 9 states in November. That is not a coincidence and every state will prohibit it by margins over 70%.

The idea that the "culture war" is over is simply not even close to the truth. It has gotten worse with the courts imposing new law.

Read it right. Cultural issues are not favoring one side over the other. Ethical issues are the divider. Bush talks ethics, Kerry talks gut. Gut feelings are for the ethics-free, uneducated, self-authoritative person who cannot judge between good and bad because evil is justified by gut feelings.

I read it correctly the first time. You're wrong. Cultuaral issues are the great divide in this country. And the courts exacerbate it on an almost daily basis.

Why? Because both sides realize that it is dangerous territory. BUT, the DOMA card is huge, it is being played out quietly and it will give the election edge to the right.

Cultuaral issues are the great divide

Not as big as you might think. Not nearly big enough to choose Democrat over Republican for President. Cultural issues are a wash for campaign purposes. A good number of voters do not see much difference between Kerry and Bush, between D and R, especially now that Kerry has been seen in church the past couple of weeks. The majority in Alaska are neither D nor R, yet many Alaskans share many cultural customs.

Simply wrong. The coasts vote D and the south votes R because of culture. How you can deny that is beyond me.

How are the coastal cultures different from the flyover cultures? We are down into subtleties the Arabs or Chinese would not see at all.

How are coastal cultures different from flyover cultures ? Are you acquainted with either ? They are practically two different countries culturally with coastal America being indistinguishable from Western Europe.

No, I just got here. Why don't you explain how they are different and how they differ from Western Europe if at all.

OK you're right, there are no differences between the secularists and the religionists, the pro choicers and the pro lifers, the pro homosexual marriage and the traditional marriage types, the pro gunners and the anti gunners.

The tension is a figment of my imagination.
