I wasn't there, but for the year I was in Vietnam I had enough sense of pride in myself that I made certain my equipment was ready for the mission, and often that mission did take me into harm's way. None of the soldiers I work with on a daily basis seem to be the type who would refuse to do their jobs.
Ill bet we will learn some interesting facts about this unit in the next 24 hours.
Yes he is--just looked at his website. Took me forever to figure out he was a dem, or at least get verification.
I'm just going by an email I got from a friend who's on freerepublic and always listening to Fox.
If these troops have nothing more than rifles to defend a tactical supply line we got Big Problems. You don't put troops in these circumstances unnecessarily. We've been over there well long enough to understand the need for overwhelming fire-power support for all aspects combat and supply. We're supposed to be the most powerful force and we'd better start acting like it -but rifles, only rifles, I hope not!
And, in the meantime, we can keep a lookout for trolling. That'll likely tell us what we need to know.
I suspect this unit has 818 5 ton trucks which are very old and slow. They need 915 series trucks which can run 65 plus making them harder to hit.
I know there is more to this story than what has come out.
While I don't agree with their actions I am disheartened but not surprized that people have already labled them poor soldiers and cowards.
Let's see...
They're Army reservists so they have rifles... they just won't fire because they haven't been cleaned for 6 months (or more).
This is why the Marine Corps has the motto "every Marine is a rifleman." Put 'em on the trucks and God help the rag-head terrorist who tries to get in their way!!!
Court Martial all the cowards.
Isn't it funny how Drudge is trying to make the headline as alarmist as humanly possible? Is this guy a media-whore or what? You'd swear the whole army is running away. Pathetic.
Cutting throught the rhetoric, it sounds like these guys were complaining about their vehicles being unroadworthy and not having a helicopter escort. Maybe that's true, maybe it's not. Other soldiers from the same company ended up going so clearly they didn't think it was such a big deal.
They went about it wrong. Refusal wasn't the way to go, the ranking member should have expressed concern and taken it up to the chain of command. The army has some serious problems. No wonder they are having a hard time getting soldiers if this is how they're treating them! They need some serious reform in that branch.
It happens, it's war. If it was a lawful order, even if stupid, they MUST obey or face court martial.
Does anyone know if coawrdice in the face of the enemy qualifies as a shooting offense ?
Hmmm.
This came from the relatives' family members?
Just like the Abu Ghraib story?
Was Hackworth involved somehow?
Indeed. We'll see soon enought, but the MSM will be swinging it for Kerry for all they're worth. If the platoon in fact refused a lawful order on the grounds they would be put in harm's way, they are guilty of cowardice in the face of the enemy. That's a whole lot more serious than refusing a lawful order, it's one of the few UCMJ articles subject to the death penalty.
Could be, but keep a pointer tuned to the ages of our posters.
That just might be something Mr. Kerry should answer when he voted the funds to support the troops.
Yes, a Democrat.
"I don't know if "Rock Hill" means that most of the soldiers are from this town or are connected to it--but I can tell you it's far, far from a liberal stronghold."
After spending the first 18 years of my life in the Hill, I couldn't agree more. I left in 1987 but my parents still live there (near Northwestern HS). I don't recognize any of these names though.
I recall early in Korean war when there was a shortage of everything, we flew aircraft that were held together with baling wire, and once even with rope. You did what had
to be done with what you had.
Bump.
