Since there are no draftees, every deserter is a person who has violated his own word, testified to by his signature on a contract with his nation.

It is not a person to whom I give a loan.

There should be a law to put a military desertion on a person's credit report.

Thnx ...x1stcav

In actual fact, I thought so to until I researched it a bit. The number is closer to 4000...it just seemed like more because they had heart =)

Canada is willing to discuss an exchange...how about it ??

Jeremy Hinzman enlisted in the Army in Boston, did a tour in Afghanistan and prepared for elite Ranger school. Then came orders to go to Iraq. He neatly piled his Army gear in his living room at Fort Bragg and fled to Canada with his wife and baby.

"No matter how much I wanted to, I could not convince myself that killing someone was ever right," Hinzman, 25, said in an interview here.

Did I miss something here, or is this guy a fricking idiot?

No, you didn't miss a thing. And to think that he was possibly in the 82d makes my teeth itch.

Just checking. When I see a reality check that's bounced that badly, it's kind of hard to be sure (c8

I think you've got it. The guy was in Afghanistan, and signed up for Ranger school after.

But then she has a baby, and ...

I'd shoot him myself if that rank coward was the father of my child. Nevermind the terrorists, here comes Mama!

sorry Sandy...I didn't make myself clear.
Let them [deserters] out of America.
It was a snide and unworthy remark, plus I used the 'we' word, which is something I abhore.

As much as some Americans might like to see the backside of deserters, there are plenty of Canadians, like myself , who don't want to fund complicated legal shenanigans involved with sending deserters back, so I'm not in favour of revoking their passports etc., which would only make the enforced return more difficult to accomplish.

I was a medic in the Army some years ago. Even as a medic, you know without a shadow of a doubt that job 1 is that you are a soldier and you perform that role first.

This guy didnt get through basic, AIT, join up for Rnager school and then decide he couldn't kill someone. He got through all that and decided he was a limp wristed John Kerry, who turned his boat around and ran while the other boats with him were covering the boat that hit a mine.

You're right, of course.

Maybe we can round them up and send them to France.

Something is fishy here. Was he going to Iraq or Ranger School? You can't be in two places at one time. He didn't fight in Afghanistan? Huh? Either the reporter doesn't know diddly-squat about the military (always highly likely) or the soldier told a 'Rather' when talking to him/her. Or both, I suppose.

Look, there are two options here:

1) They desert and are banned from the U.S. for life.

2) They stay, go to jail, and they vote here until then.

Me, I wish more of the coward left would move to Canada. I think it's almost more respectable to be an outright dodger and take the heat for it by losing your citizenship than going the John F'in Kerry route, where you pull out all the stops to get out of serving, get caught, game the system to get out, and then badmouth your 'fellow servicemen' with extra standing due to your 'service.'

But think about this particular coward's cost to the the country. If he is ever allowed back, he should be a pack mule for the army until it's recouped the cost of putting his ass into training as a Ranger!

This assumes that the guy ever was such a thing, anyway. Wouldn't be the first time a super-duper-vet-military-mofo fraud cropped up.

I can understand the fear of dying, or unwillingness to kill other human beings, but seriously, if he didn't want to do both of those things, he shouldn't have volunteered. It's not like a truckload of draft agents jumped out and caught him with a large butterfly net and took him away against his will.

I like your beer, and your natural beauty, your music ( the lefty Lightfoot comes to mind) and (now, don't take this as an insult) your Westerners. But I'd never trade your ex-pats for ours.

My friend, we got the better part of the deal.

Correction...my advisors tell me it's 3 1/2 subs and a bunch of Sea King helicopter parts.

The upside is that the subs have co-ed facilities, and the helicopters have been crash tested....

The real story is what he is not saying.

Just how did his anti-killing beliefs materialize.

My guess is a religious change to Muslim. He would then find himself on the wrong side as other who have been indoctrinated into Islam have.

But this is not a religious war, so I suppose I am wrong.
