Kerry put the "con" in "consolation".

I think Jimmy Carter made the way for an honorable discharge. My opinion only.

Without copies of the 2001 discharge papers, this is just rumor.

Here is a copy of Kerry's Honorable Discharge from February 16, 1978. This is from Kerry's web site, so it can be taken with a grain of salt. He should have been discharged around '72 or '73, and the '78 discharge was after Carter's amnesty.

More at the John F. Kerry Timeline.

A bad conduct discharge (BCD) is a disciplinary action, as a result of a finding of guilt by a Special or General Courts Martial. IIRC, a Summary Courts Martial does not have a BCD as a punishment option. So, a Special or General Courts Martial would have a presiding officer (judge) and a panel of other officers to hear the evidence and convict, or acquit. There would be court recordings, lawyers on both sides, plus LOTS of witnesses, etc., to any Special/General Courts Martial. Surely, one of the swift boat vets would be knowledgeable if such an event occurred.

Just a hunch, but based on events of last week in these forums and involving Jimmy Carter's name it's funny you mentioned that, but I have a funny feeling we'll be hearing more about that angle soon.....just a hunch....

A BCD is a sentence to a military prison. I never knew people like that. The ones that got kicked out that I knew were sent on their way with a General Discharge; usually for stupid feats. Use your imagination about those feats. One guy lost 2 stripes for selling his ciggie ration on the black market. And he didn't smoke! Another guy brought a bunch of hookers on base in an AF truck!

I quietly stepped away from those guys and left with an Honorable Discharge.

Clearly the above document was produced on a word processor (fully justified text). I have documents from the Navy from the late seventies that do not look anything like that. Just because it is on his website, does not mean that it is not a fake.

I saw guys getting kicked out of the Navy in the early eighties with BCDs for drug use--after the Nav started cracking down on that stuff. I do not think that it is unusual to get a BCD and not do time. However, what I personally found criminal, was after I was honorably discharged in 1983 and went on job interviews the prospective employers didn't give a rat's rear end what my discharge status was.

I do not know if any of this is tongue in cheek but thank God someone is pointing out all the treasonous behaviour and everything we DON'T know because Kerry won't sign the 180.

Of course they don't. In their eyes you are well trained and able. That is all they want. They don't know what active duty is because they did not participate. Accept it and use your experience for your own benefit. That's all you can do.

Concur. I'm an Army Brat from that era, and have all of Dad's old correspondence, and nothing looks even remotely like that doc. At best, it's all done on Selectrics with fixed-pitch Courier balls.

The dates definitely don't sound right. I know my husband did 2 years of inactive dute after Viet Nam, then he got his honorable discharge. Kerry's 1978 isn't right.

Sections 1162 and 1163 of title 10 do not seem to exist:

What's up with that I wonder?

C'mon, it is a preprinted form with the Kerry info dropped in by computer. No different from my high school grades mailing from the early 70's

The other thing is that Kerry's discharge is actually fairly typical for someone who does not resign their commission. Even though he was inactive, his records would have gone through two tries fot Lt. Commander. After that, he would have been discharged - 1978 seems to be the proper time. You guys need to spend a little time over at Swiftvets forum.

I know the guy is a skunk - but there are two main things for our focus. First are the lies he told after he came home that still today torture the veterans' minds. The other is that there is no evidence that that the supposed falsified reports that support Kerry's medals came from anyone other than John Kerry. The Swifties are doing the harder job of trying to prove that ONLY Kerry did or could write those reports.
