They keep saying the middle class is vanishing, but SOMEBODY is buying all these houses.

Many people here realize that a mass deportation of the illegals will cause a vacuum in the real estate market, which could quite easily collapse the whole house of cards. It's going to crash anyway, but nobody wants to look at that elephant yet.

Huh? LOL! What mass deportation? They've been telling us it's going to crash for 50 years. There are 5000 people for every house! They aint making anymore prime realestate here. Guess what? It's called supply and demand, bro.

In the future, 600k will be a deal, if you want a home where you can go surfing in the morning, and barbecue in the afternoon in *February*, while wearing shorts.

Hehe. You want a home with world class weather year round? Your going to pay my friend...

Seen this coming years ago. That's why all the building in the inland empire. The coastal plains are all spoken for.

Yeah, it's people with good money, and good jobs. Like I said, it's driving the rif raf to San Bernardino, Vegas, and all points east.

Seen it coming years ago.

Now we're low-sixes, but where do we go? Maybe if our families all move with us to Texas. :-)

With 600K, you can move your families as well. My brother just purchased a nice colonial - 4 bd, 2 living, 2 dining, 2 BA, 4 car garage with a MIL apartment in the back, huge treed yard, I'm guessing +3000 Sq ft --selling price just at $110,000.

There's more to Texas than humidity and bugs. There's the other half, for example.

In Arlington County Virginia, just accross the Potomac from DC, I have a 1,500 square foot home wiht thre tiny bedrooms, 2 baths (one int he basement and no powder room on the main floor) with no garage and a postage stamp yard. It's very cute -- very cute.

And you can buy it for $650,000.00 But don't wait too long, it will be 700,000 by spring. LOL

If one wanted 3,800 square feet in my neigborhood -- one would need 1.2-1.4 million depending on amenities.

Yes--except the problem is when you have a growing family. We bought our 2000 sq ft house in 93 (SF, CA suburb) for $289K, when we had one child, and our house is now worth $600K, or more. We have 3 growing boys and are thinking of another. But to upgrade to a bigger house w/ a bigger backyard or another bedroom would now cost $1 million if we stayed in CA.

Alternatively we could sell our house and practically pay cash to buy a much bigger house w/ a much bigger yard pretty much ANYWHERE else in the nation. Basically we could live like kings for a fraction of the cost.

I love the CA weather but I'm getting tired of the taxes and the leftists and the illegal immigrants and the traffic and the poor schools. I'm ready to go live in a "red state." I've lived in Houston and in Washington DC so I know I can tolerate bugs, humidity, and hurricanes. It's a fair trade.

If you move to Houston you will have to live out in the suburbs to get a house for $250,000, Katy, Conroe, Clear Lake. Houses in the close in neighborhoods are $500,000 up into the millions. I am amazed at the prices here, even for older houses that need work. The exception would be someplace like the Houston Heights. It is an old old close in neighborhood where you can still find a house for $200,000 but it might be 100 years old.

Yeah, but in Texas you have weather that's uninhabitable for humans. LOL!

I don't see how the housing market can sustain itself at this rate. I paid $262,000 for my house about seven years ago and I thought that was a lot. Well my house would sell for over $400,000 today so I guess I got lucky. There are people I work with who make much less than me who are paying $350,000 or more for their homes. I don't know how they are doing it.

Well, I wouldn't know. My wife and I built our own house and it's all paid for. I suppose it cost us about $150K - land and all - for our 3000 s.f. log home.

Which neighborhoods in CA are seeing price drops from this process? I was under the impression even the slums in L.A. were going upscale.

None. Pomona, California is a well known over-urbanized poophole, but a large city with a lot of homes and quite a bit of crime (a CHP officer was gunned down out in front of the courthouse here earlier this year). Still, the median price is 300K. Up a staggering 35%. A lot of the gays that can't afford LA are moving there to take advantage of it's historic downtown and neglected craftsman homes.

And SUV's. ;-) It's catching up with people in LA and OC, though. They may live in million dollar homes, but in the "low rent" Inland Empire people can still afford an SUV AND a Beamer. Seriously, every Mexican immigrant that's been here for a few years has a rimmed up Suburban. There are a lot more Beamers, Benz's, and Hummers here then in LA or OC. I guess if your not making a 3K housepayment you can afford a little more. :-)

And that is never going to happen w/ the consistent and never ending immigration of Asian people from all over the planet to Southern Calif., who have endless sums of money to spend. Ever. This is how it is in our San Gabriel Valley, know that for a fact.

I agree 1000%. Rich immigrant Asians keep the prices moving up. They pretty much own the entire San Gabriel Valley from from Walnut to Diamond Bar and they are coming this way (Pomona)

Sure, on a per profit basis; he probably did lose about $100K. But your projection is based on constants, like cost of living, job security. There are no such constants in CA. The weather is constant in CA. All costs in CA are rising. Some job sectors are very uncertain. Was it 5 or 7 hospitals just recently closing its doors in Southern CA? Joehadenuf; you crack me up. You got some real estate to sell? :)

We just upgraded our home in South San Jose.

We bought our first home in '92 for $325K. It sold in May for $850K. It was 2200 sq ft, and it needed lots of work.

We bought a 3400 sq ft home in the same area for 1.1 million. It's fixed up and a great house.

We figured we needed to spend $100K on the other home just to update the yard, kitchen, floors, bathrooms. After that, we would still have a small home with a bad floor plan.

The extra mortgage isn't so bad, but the extra taxes are awful. They'll never go away.

We tried to move out of the area, but my husband can't find work in other parts of the country. He has a great job here. Hopefully, when the kids are done with college, we'll be able to retire and move some place cheaper.
