Good link. The Ensco rig was drilling for Dominion Exploration at Main Pass 280 when Ivan came by.

"If it was jacked down I'm surprised the legs are gone."

They would have maintained their airgap for the storm.
It would be my guess that the legs collapsed and stripped out of their slots as the rig hit the water.
Somewhere in the Gulf are three jack-up legs with just their spud cans holding them in place.

Main Pass is a wild place.

In Main Pass we lost one man who was crushed to death by barges and another lost his legs.
I heard their screams for many months.

Is this the rig you wanted me to visit right before the storm?

Since you plan to be a roughneck in a few years, you might want to look at this.

That's my guess also, but unless the legs all gave way at the same time and the rig went more or less straight down, I'm surprised it didn't enter the water at an angle and sink. The only other thing would be if a wave big enough to fill the air gap (????) came along and floated it off, breaking the legs. I just can't imagine that happening in the Gulf. I amazed it's floating.... bet the Coast Guard is going nuts!

Yep! The same helicopter that brought us in was going to take you back out, but you chickened out!

Wow. It looks like a Meccano set that a fat kid kid sat on. Is it a total writeoff or can it be repaired?

Jamaica was OK from our perspective. Of course we were only there a few hours. Beautiful country. However, we did drive through some very poor areas.

The Pampano platform reported one wave in excess of 100 feet from Ivan. Yikes.

The hull and some pieces like the cranes might be salvageable, but as a drilling rig, it's finished.

"withstand 120 mph winds"

Is this the rig that was reported to be found 75 miles from its orginal location?

When your "friends" constantly tell you, "What's the worst that can happen?", you get a little jumpy!!!

That was probably the semi.

This rig was floating off 80 miles off Venice, LA, which is about right for it's Main Pass location.

Goodness! Roughneck I might be, but fish bait I'm not!!

Mother Nature is one powerful lady, isn't she?

Just thank heaven everyone had been removed and taken to safety before this happened.

When 'ya comin' to see me??? It's been 2 months! I'm learning to throw temper tantrums and so Mommy and Nana says that "TT" stand for Temper Tantrum and not Texas Termite.

I know, punkin'!
I've been counting every day!

I'll be there in eight days. Pack a little bag and start crawling down the street.
I'll pick you up, and we'll go have fun!

(BTW: Don't tell your Nana or mommy)

Howdy, TT!
I reckon you're close to big enough to tote a shootin' iron by now!
I'll be watching for you at our next big shoot.
