Daschle is evil, and Thune has a real shot at winning this race -- but Daschle is a very smart politician, and he and his tactics are ignored only at one's peril. He's a bit like W in the sense that he knows how to play the "misunderestimating" game quite well... Any Democrat who wants to survive election after election in SD has to be preety clever, and Daschle is.
Also, a lot of people in SD who don't pay that close attention probably think they are still voting for the conservative/moderate Democrat they voted for way back in the early days.
