I have another mirror positioned so I can see the white vans driving by out the window.

Actually I have a gated private drive and some Great Pyrenese guardian dogs who protect our livestock and fence lines. Those white vans don't ascare me none.

Could've been. It's sure been awhile. But it was funny...and memorable.

Yep nothing like a time stamp to make this fun. Went to school in Abilene my bet is that whomever faxed them for him remembers him or whomever did it.

Is there a CBS affiliate in Abilene? Why wouldn't or couldn't they use their fax machine?

Anonymity. Keep the office gossip to a minimum. It's a big story. If the bigshots from NYC come in the local affiliate, well, you know how reporters keep secrets.

Do you think they (CBS/WP/Whoever) are trying to hide the real source of the documents by a misdirection ploy?

Yes: the DNC.

It won't be long. Fax machines keep logs. The time will be traced to the transaction (anybody using Word to fake a 1973 memo will surely pay with a debit card or credit card), and we'll have our guy.

"Ya know, as explosive as this story could have been (if they weren't busted by finer minds), I can't imagine why those docs were faxed from a Kinko's. And if this supposedly unimpeachable source was "known" by Rather, then why risk the Kinko's and the trail it would leave. Wouldn't they have met in person? It sounds more like document laundering to me."

I am thinking along the same lines. How can the kinkos story really be believed? These people are habitual liars. Is the kinkos story a diversion? Is it partially true? Is it's partial truth being used to obscure the dnc's involvement? Just what are the 'markings' that say its from the Texas kinkos? Do ALL the memos have these markings? CBS is not sincere about any of this and it is more likely than not that the 'kinkos' is not the whole story...the truth is still being hidden.

There needs to be a new feature on FR. And I'd be happy to design it and pay for it. We need a "beep" feature, so that users can go to sleep near their computers but if something hot happens the story (decided by the webmaster) would generate a beep on your computer.
It was the same in the days of the old wire services. Certain level stories made bells ring in the copy office. (hence the term bell ringer).

My one goal in life was to post the 1000th (no superscript available) post in a free republic thread. Now, thanks to Dan Rather, I have a chance. Thank you Dan!!!

Mary Mapes was reported as going to Burkett to talk with him as part of this story right? What if on the way back to Abilene she decided to fabricate these memos? She stops at a kinkos, fabricates these things and then sends them on to Dan?

Or, more likely, Mapes picks up copies of the documents from Burkett. Then stops off at Kinko's on her way back to DFW to fax Dan an advance copy of them.

"CBS gets the documents from KINKOS, thats really great investigative journalism, LOL, hey the originals are probably on one of the Hard Drives at the rental computers there - Developing!"

Again, if this was a 'criminal investigation' which it seems it should be; then the computers could be 'checked out'; and of course, the Kinko records of who used them;

in the meantime; if it their is not any investigation; the info could be in jeopardy.

No?

You know, sometimes when people want to make a copy, they run the original through a fax machine. Everytime I've seen that done, the copy is VERY dirty.

It sounds more like document laundering to me.

Too complicated. Probably a rush job. The docs might even have been created at Kinkos. Type, print, crumple, copy (sloppily, repeatedly) and fax. One stop shopping.
