Read this carefully. The documents from "unimpeachable sources" are OTHER documents such as the official records everybody has seen already. The "recovered" docs are the forgeries and CBS is saying they are NOT the sole basis for the story. The "real" basis is people who knew Killian's "thoughts." My bet is that is Killian's secretary, who despises Bush.
The whole pot was cooked up with forgeries just so they could serve what was otherwise a very thin soup by an elderly "partisan." But even she won't support the forgeries.
Don't be distracted. Who supplied these forgeries and why were they used? Those are the questions.

This CBS memo is dated 1972. Can you explain that?Nixon did it.
To: okiegop
That's right -- it was also based on an interview with an extreme partisan who is a drinking buddy of Rather's daughter.

including documents that were provided by unimpeachable sources I guess this lets Bill Clinton off the hook.

lets have the FBI go and seize the documents from CBS and go after the originals.Oh, you mean the same FBI that is/was/or has investigated Sandy Berger for illegally removing classified documents from the National Archives?

Note that by responding with something written and released from CBS Global HQ several days ago, they're allowed to say something widely known to be false--there is not one forensic document expert vouching for those memos--while saying that they're just following orders.

"unimpeachable sources"
Oh, well then I guess CBS is right...
uh huh...

" . . . a preponderance of evidence, . . . " Hello, CBS? Nice parsing. But no cigar. How about stating, 'a preponderance of PROOF!' It's in the pudding, ya know, and pee soup is a bad substitute for Jello.

That is just the same thing rather said.
The totality of the story show it to be an INTENTIONAL LIE.
The totality of the story shows malice by CBS in tramitting the LIE.
There is no controversy that the documents ARE FORGERIES.
There is no controversy that the documents DO NOT FOLLOW NG PROCEDURE.
There is no controversy that Killian DID NOT WRITE THEM.
CBS should just kill its news division and put it out of its misery.

Sorry, CBS, you are going to have to do better than this if you want this story to go away. We want facts and we want them now.

"preponderance of evidence"
I'm seeing a cartoon here;
Slide 1. Blather holding the "memo" with a little weight on it. Blather: "See! Evidence!"
Slide 2. CBS Headquarters flattened by a 2 trillion ton weight labeled "preponderance of evidence"

not based solely on recovered documents, but rather on a preponderance of evidence, They apparently think it means something like "a whole bunch of evidence." In law, the phrase is " a preponderance of the evidence [emphasis added]," meaning the greater part (or the greater weight) of the entire body of evidence presented at a trial.

CBS is hoping that people are going to get bored and burned out by this story and after a while everyone will move on to other things and this will get swept under the rug.
CBS is telling the affiliates to stick to their guns.
All the more reason for us to keep hammering away.
