Senate [Democrats] Defies Bush on Homeland Security Jobs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate on Wednesday voted to stop the Department of Homeland Security opening up sensitive immigration jobs to private companies, ignoring a White House threat to veto the bill if it contained the measure.

The Republican-led Senate voted 49-47 to attach the plan to a $32 billion bill to fund homeland security operations in the 2005 fiscal year. In an election-year disappointment for President Bush, several Republicans joined Democrats in support of the measure.

The White House said Bush would veto the bill, introduced by Democrat Senator Patrick Leahy, if the amendment stays in the final version.

Not Waived, 50-46

167: Thomas amendment #3582:

Can you say invitation for VOTER FRAUD?

E-mail I got from Camp Kerry today.

Dear Xxxx,

In this election, we need to make sure every vote counts.

There are seven million voters we need to reach in the next few days and we need your help. September 15 is the deadline in many states for Americans living overseas to register to vote and send in their ballot applications.

If you know any U.S. citizen living overseas, let them know they can get all the information they need and even fill out absentee ballot forms online by visiting:

Thank you,

Mary Beth Cahill

Were you avoiding the draft?

No, I was becoming a pilot.

You wanted to serve?

Yes I did.

But when you were asked do you want to go overseas, you said no.

I didn't know that. But I actually tried to go on a Palace Alert program.

That was later.

It was. After I became a pilot.

Palace Alert program was being phased out.

Not really, a couple of my buddies got to go. ...

... But they'd already graduated.

That's true. I couldn't go until actually I'd gotten my –

I was curious about the sequence. You got out of combat school on June 23, 1970. Palace Alert programs were all closed down overseas as of June 30. So could you have gone even if you signed up for it?

I guess not if that's the case, but I remember going to see [the supervisor] to try to get signed up for it. You just ask the commander to put you in. He said you can't go because you're too low on the totem pole. I'm not trying to make this thing any grander than it is. ...
