I concur that this is a truely exellent work of literature. The first chapter really hooks you into the rest of the novel imo. If you'd like to read it, but don't particularly feel like going to a bookstore, you might check out
Project Gutenberg which makes
Ben Hur available to anyone in the world to download and read.

From my reading of this Wallace offered a general amnisty for all criminals including the KID. He even met with the Kid, but the Kid rejected the amnisty.
I will have to check it out again. I might be wrong.
