If you're talkng about the additive one smells when a gas stove runs unlit, then no. Very different stink.

Could be a number of things, I doubt you are in danger though unles you are next door to a plant.

THAT is an interesting thought. I've been noticing a "burning wood" smell lately, and have attributed it to burns in Mexico being blown up here. It's happened before. I wonder if you may be right. It's amazing how far stuff can be wind-borne.

Gee, I don't suppose it might be related to the salt dome 1,000 foot flare not that far from you? Be glad most of it is pyrolized or it would really reek.

"Mercaptan" also refers to a class of naturally occurring sulphur containing compounds that often have to be removed from petroleum. They are usually described as having a rotting smell, especially rotten eggs. A noxious discharge from a refinery or other petroleum facility could be due to natural mercaptans. Sewers and swamps can also release such smells due to natural decomposition.
