Dole wants to know how Kerry got three purple hearts without "bleeding".

LOL! Way to go, Bob!

Yes, Dole's war record was heroic, but it could have been distored in the same way Kerry's is

http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/editorials/articles/2004/08/22/big_lies_for_bush

"Big lies for Bush

IMAGINE IF supporters of Bill Clinton had tried in 1996 to besmirch the military record of his opponent, Bob Dole. After all, Dole was given a Purple Heart for a leg scratch probably caused, according to one biographer, when a hand grenade thrown by one of his own men bounced off a tree. And while the serious injuries Dole sustained later surely came from German fire, did the episode demonstrate heroism on Dole's part or a reckless move that ended up killing his radioman and endangering the sergeant who dragged Dole off the field?

The truth, according to many accounts, is that Dole fought with exceptional bravery and deserves the nation's gratitude. No one in 1996 questioned that record. Any such attack on behalf of Clinton, an admitted Vietnam draft dodger, would have been preposterous.

Yet amazingly, something quite similar is happening today as supporters of President Bush attack the Vietnam record of Senator John Kerry.

The situations are not completely parallel. Bush was not a draft dodger, but he certainly was a Vietnam avoider, having joined the Texas Air National Guard rather than serving in the regular military..."

He was excellent. I was very proud of him. My husband and I actually did a high five at one of his comments.

Dang! I have to learn to tune in CNN on these rare occasions.
Maybe Wolf's show provides a transcript?
If so, it would deserve its own thread.

John Kerry of the National Office of the VVAW, spoke at the YMCA, Philadelphia, on June 14, 1971. In this talk he stated that HO CHI MINH is the GEORGE WASHINGTON of Vietnam.

Hmm, I didn't know that George Washington was trained in France. That would be analogous to HoChiMinh being trained in Moscow, which he was.

GW was a high ranking officer in the militia during the French and Indian War, serving with the Bristish. Ho would have needed to have served with the French for their to be any analogy at all.

While Bob Dole truly Earned his PH, Lurch on the other hand did not earn them and his medals but only won them. That is the difference

Good post. I've herad that Bob Dole has a very dim view of Kerry. I'm glad Dole is speaking up.

It's not difficult to have a dim view of a dimbulb like Kerry. Go Dole ! Go Dole!

Unless the man threw the grenade when not in contact with the enemy, unlikely but possible, the situations are not all that analogous. For another thing Dole didn't throw the grenade, Kerry did fire the grenade launcher round that resulted in his first injury, and he did throw the grenade that ended up with "rice" embedded in his buttocks. In both cases there was no enemy contact at the time. Friendly fire injuries count, but only if the friends are shooting at the enemy at the time.

it's all mud J-4 and it's about who gets stuck with most of it clinging in the end.

W is best to stay way out of it till the debates if he can.

Kerry made a critical error taking all these Vets with 3-4 decades of pent up anger on.

I hope they kick his ass back under Therayza's skirt where he is most comfortable.

even if the swifties were lying, this stuff pales to the NAACP James Byrd ads in 00.

What the Sifwties are doing in their own way is softening Kerry for the major attack on his twenty year record in the Sneate. I, for one, am delighted that they are doing it. I wasn't in Vietnam but I served with a lot of guys who were and they educated me on John Kerry 30 years ago. It's nice to see that guy getting his comeuppance by the guys he slandered and tagged as baby killing, drug addled madmen.

Well put. I actually think the revelation of Kerry's Senate record during and after the RNC will blindside many in the self-inflictedly blind media.

... I think we're going about this wrong...

I agree with you but I'll go even further.

I don't think we should be hellbent on attacking Kerry at all. Why? Because all the Dems that I've talked to or even read about online are only voting for Kerry because they hate Bush.

Which means they'll vote for him regardless of his bogus war wounds, medals, or even his abysmal Senate record.

My thinking is that we need to give them a reason to vote FOR Bush.

The Bush campaign needs to do the very thing the Dems have made them afraid of doing: run ads with Bush's carrier landing, his going to Ground Zero, his Thanksgiving trip to Iraq.

Show how Bush is keeping America safe.

Just my opinion.

To be honest, I would love to see Bush step up in a news conference or something and when a reporter asks him to comment on Kerry's vietnam service I would like to see Bush respond:

"This campaign is not about what sommeone did for 4 months in 196x. The service and sacrifice that every service man gave should be honored.

No, this campaign is about the direction this country is going in and who is best to lead it and define it. To evaluate the candidates take a look at their whole career. My record is clear from my years as Gov. and my four years as President. My opponent's record is also clear with his many years in the Senate and the positions he has taken (and flopped) on key votes......"

BTW, before one break Wolf was so rattled by Bob's strong showing he said Kerry had earned the "Silver Cross".

Sure that wasn't the Silver Surfer?

Are you claiming the Swift Vets are distorting Kerry's record?

It says much that over 150 men would band together to say in one voice that Kerry is UNFIT to be commander-in-chief. It seems farfetched to think that over 250 men from across the political spectrum would conspire to "distort" Kerry's record.

It is notable that none of the men that served with Bob Dole felt moved to contradict his record, whether because they truly questioned any claims he made or because they maliciously sought to "distort" his record.

No, not one who served with Dole felt the need to speak in such a manner.

The difference should tell you everything you need to know and it should illustrate the Swift Vets are engaged in no frivolous "distortion".

Oh, and I don't think Bob Dole, who did not brag about his service in an unseemly manner, would refuse to release any records had he been questioned at all. Kerry has refused to release his records (a pattern he has, as he also won't authorize the release of his attendance--or not--at the closed door Intelligence Committee meetings).
