The carpetbagging was enough for me to start looking at Jerry Kohn, the pro-life Libertarian candidate.

Amazing how many republicans think principles should only apply to democrats...

Reparations would harm people who never owned slaves and reward people who never were slaves.

That's true. And the alternative is never compensating slaves and their descendants.

A balance can be struck. And Keyes' proposal seems reasonable to me.

Just an FYI. This is one of the issues of Chicago that Keyes would have to face at some point in dealing with the issues of Illinois.

Slavery Reparations

Seems this is an ongoing issue.

Right!

Michael Jordon and LeBron James need a tax exemption and I suppose that I need to pay their taxes for them.

Ambassador Keyes needs to get the Slave-Holders or Slave-Owners to pay the Taxes for them if he wants to, not just those people who happen to be a different color from the typical slaves.

Most of the people who live in the USA, regardless of the color of their skin, were immigrants and not rich when they got here. They probably worked in underpaid, Slave Scale wage Jobs until they could get on their feet.

We are virtually All Immigrants, except for the Native Americans who are running the Casino Monopoly. The vast majority of us Immigrants were not slave holders and we resent the idea that we should be paying excess taxes to pay for someone else's sins.

Ah, but from what I am seeing it wasn't any person who could, but African-Americans who could prove it... Subtle, but distinct difference... It's called "Pandering".

Of course, but would the judicial system make your plumber, your neighbor, your Great Aunt Ethel pay the judgment?

Good point. But then we're back to the Jews and the Germans again. I don't think the idea is invalid in principle.

And even we were immigrants thousands of years ago, AND in the 1500s and 1600s American Indians were also kidnapped and enslaved as well... Just an FYI.

So you believe the government (which is code word for taxpayers) should be responsible for compensating everyone who has had some injustice visited upon them?

No.

Plus, that "compensation" should not only be awarded to those suffering the injustice but to all their heirs, and their heirs heirs, for hundreds of years?

No.

Do I think that it's wrong in principle for the government to compensate slaves and their descendants because of a government policy that kept them in bondage?

No.

And he's for it?

Good to know.

BTW, when will he get to the REAL issues?

I have an idea - how about we pay reparations to every person in this country, regardless of color, who was a slave in this country?

Now, we just need to find some...

My understanding is that only people who can prove slave ancestry will be given the abatement.

Please tell me why someone who was not a slave should be given financial compensation, paid for by someone who was never a slave owner.

I don't see how anyone could justify this in any way, shape, or form. The fact that anyone on FreeRepublic is even entertaining this seems to have more to do with the messenger than the message. That is scary.

Amazing how many republicans think principles should only apply to democrats...

It's amazing how many republicans think W is pricipled because he:

Wants amnesty for illegals.

Gives Ted Kennedy free reign to write the education bill.

Says he is willing to sign a new AWB.

Signs CFR.

Let's a Dem minority tie up his judicial appointments without a whimper.

Nope, he's no hypocrite. He never said he would do otherwise. He's a principled conservative alright but he's no conservative in principle.

Excuse me, but we've been told for five years that Alan Keyes IS the real conservative, as opposed to us fake conservatives, so why should a person NOT assume that anything he discusses must be a real, true conservative value.

Because unlike you people, we can vocally disagree with the people we support.

And how do you feel about people whose ancestors never owned slaves paying the bill for the compensation you seek? That's just our tough luck, or what?

Yes. It's a ham-fisted form of justice, to be sure.

But the situation is analogous to the Germans who were "innocent" of Jewish blood paying compensation to the Jews who suffered under the Nazis.

Should this injustice prevent the German people from undertaking the task of compensating the Jews for their suffering?

The only convoluted logic I see is coming from the Keyes supporters.

This is just too rich.

The very people who hammered us because Bush signed CFR are now asking us to suspend reality and see what a great idea this is -- because, it has to be, right, because it came out of Keyes' own mouth.

Keep those cards and letters coming, people!

"I think it is insidiously delicious too!"

Assimilaton is complete.

"Only those that earn an income (i.e. work) will qualify. I can see a small business/entreprenurial boom happening."

So, only the ones on whom the effects of past discrimination has passed will reap benefits from reparations to remedy the continuing effects of past discrimination. Makes sense to me.

"And when their reparations tax dispensation is up, they won't be on the dem/lib tax and spend plantation anymore."

Once you start them, the handouts will never cease.

"Shut down the yap about reparations, urban renewal, rising black entreprenurial class all in one swell foop (er, fell swoop)."

I see. By eyes agreeing that reparations is a justifiable issue, it will shut down all discussion about it. Amazing.
