If the 4th plane hadn't departed Newark late and then been downed by the impromptu civilian militia aboard then we wouldn't have had much of a government when the capital was taken out.

Amen.

We are safer from plague, pestilence, famine and weather than any of our ancestors ever were.

No s***, Sherlock, but that doesn't do a thing about the millions of crazed, murderous Islamicists that are bent on killing us and imposing their intolerant, backward, 8th-Century hate-filled "religion" on us!

I think America in 2004 is about as far removed from fundamental danger as any nation in history has ever been.

So the author supports President Bush and agrees with him that his decisive military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq have indeed made us safer?!?!?

I would venture a confident no.

Hey, Muhammed...if you're looking for a target that will get a lot of attention, there's a building in NYC made of black rock that has a big eye on the front.

Talk about 09/10 mentality!!! This is what the dems want us to believe too. That all is well, nothing to see here folks, 09/11 was just a fluke. Just like 1993 WTC, Kenya embassy, etc... If we just act like it never happened, we won't have to deal with it.

Tell that to the three thousand people that died. This guy has seriously got weenie written on his face.

No other country on earth has military might even close to ours. Has such a global monopoly on armed power ever existed? Has any nation had less to fear from its neighbors and foreign armies?

There are five nations on the Earth who, using their nuclear stock-piles, could reduce every city in the United States to a smoking ruin. This has not changed.

Yes, indeedy-
The Declining Terrorist Threat by Larry C. Johnson (July 10, 2001 NYTimes:
"Judging from news reports and the portrayal of villains in our popular entertainment, Americans are bedeviled by fantasies about terrorism. They seem to believe that terrorism is the greatest threat to the United States and that it is becoming more widespread and lethal. They are likely to think tht the United States is the most popular target of terrorists. And they almost certainly have the impression that extremist Islamic groups cause most terrorism. None of these beliefs are based in fact..."

I have some liberal to moderate acquaintances with whom I regularly discuss politics who kind of echo this guy. Personally, I believe everything changed on 9/11. I'd wager a majority of folks here believe the same way. We can't go back to the way things were on 9/10/01, and I don't foresee a time anywhere in the immediate or relatively distant future when we'll be able to let our guard down and stop being vigilant.

However, these folks ... and I think they're sincere even if I don't agree with them, I don't think it's all political or all about Bush ... truly believe that 9/11 was horrible, but that things shouldn't change because of it and that a susceptibility to terrorist attacks is part of the price we'll have to pay to continue to live in a free and open society. Pinning them down a bit, they certainly favor taking precautions and aren't just going to wait around until al-Qaida lobs one into the Capitol rotunda, but they don't think it's possible with metaphysical certititude to steal a line from Mr. McLaughlin to prevent a terrorist attack and don't want to make the U.S. less free and open in an drastic effort to achieve that which is unachievable, and think that we ought to just live our lives and go about our business and stop worrying so much.

Again, I'm at polar opposites to this, my point is that Mr. Meyer is not alone in believing this.

The freaking leftists need to have a conference call or something and make up their damn minds -- either the terrorist threat is "exaggerated" and we are "not in danger" OR Bush's warmongering has increased terrorist recruiting and made us less safe than ever before.

They can't have it both ways.

Oh wait, I forgot -- they're Democrats, so they can.

And ironically, that same idiot also helped promote the lame effort by MoveOn to impeach Bush for misleading us.

Oh, Larry C. Johnson was a former CIA and State Department counterterrorism specialist when he wrote his article for the NYTimes! He became an associate at the Business Exposure Reduction Group (BERG) LLC.

Did Dickyboy catch todays story about the mosque members trying to buy stinger missiles? Or does he not buy that either. Does he buy 9/11?

We don’t need to declare ourselves "a nation in danger" ...

So if I understand this correctly, King Meyer rules by fiat.

Very comforting inded.

All of this talk about us being safe and terrorism being exaggerated is designed to prepare the ground for the inevitable backlash after the expected attacks between now and the election. Assume that there will be an attack, which seems a pretty fair bet; how will the electorate respond?

If the people are mentally prepared for the attack, know that the government has done everything possible to protect them, and are confident that the government will respond appropriately, they will rally round the President and re-elect him.

If the people are feeling safe they will presume that the government also feels safe. Perhaps the President might actually be pressured into saying they are safe. After the attack, if the electorate perceives there has been any stone left unturned to promote public safety or think that the government will not be able to respond effectively, they will throw the President out on his ear.

So, if you want the President to be thrown out on his ear, the task this Summer is to convince people that they are safe and the government should relax. That is why we are hearing all of this "we are not in danger" BS right now.

This guy is an idiot!

"No other country on earth has military might even close to ours. Has such a global monopoly on armed power ever existed? Has any nation had less to fear from its neighbors and foreign armies?"

Islamic terrorists are not a classifiable order of battle army, they are a loose knit bunch of clowns driven by perverted ideology. This makes them more dangerous to America than a quantifiable enemy.

"Modern America does know real danger. The nuclear duel of the Cold War was real danger. America is safer than it was when the Soviet Union existed. The threat of nuclear proliferation, of a nuclear attack from a small state or terrorists, existed then, too. The country is probably better prepared to prevent that now."

Yeah, right. Mutually assured destruction kept us safe during the Cold War because the Russians don't subcribe to an ideology that prefers death over life. The Wahhabis don't care if they get killed. This makes it more dangerous to us.
