China built a wall. It is easy to seal up the border. You start in Washington, Maine, Minnesota and you work your way cross country.

Same thing in the south

Cost? 100 billion. And worth every penny.

Have a good time but remember
There is danger in the summer moon above
Will I see you in September
Or lose you to a summer love....

There are still those who claim the terrorists want Bush to win because (1) despite his mushy talk, Kerry won't cut-and-run in Iraq, and the media and world opinion will let him do things in Iraq that they would object to if Bush did them; and (2) Bush is useful to the terrorists as a lightning rod to attract new recruits.

I guess these guys didn't read "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," because, at some point, the wolf shows up.

Free labor too... 10 million Mexicans in the U.S. could donate a couple months of labor, before we ship them back south of the wall.

We could not do it if we had a draft and put every able-bodied male under 45 on the border. We have 2 long land borders and 3 coasts full of inlets and islands and bays, etc. We do not have the money or the manpower.

We have adequate technologies to build border fences that would detect intrusions. Yes, it's a big job, but compared with, say, putting 10 carrier battle groups to sea just to show we can do it, it isn't THAT big.

Nah. At $1M per mile, a fence would cost under $10B. About half what the Big Dig in Boston cost.

Border control naysayers want to paint this as un-doable. It is VERY do-able.

"They may not be trying to swing the election. The terrorists may be attempting to kill the President."

What a ridiculous comment to make! Don't you know that al Qaeda wants Bush to win as he has been such a great recruiting tool for them??? Sheesh! Don't you read the NY Times???[/sarcasm off]

Israel has a much much more difficult job: They have to defend people right up against their border from attack, e.g. from snipers. And Israel's fence has to withstand heavily armed assaults. We just have to keep people crossing and detect when they do try to defeat the fence and respond. Much much cheaper.

Hey, anyone think that the Bush folks may have "set up" the NY Times and Wash Post with this "old information" story? Ala the Kerry camp setting up the NY Post with the Gephardt story? The Times and Wash Post are going to look unbelievably stupid and partisan when this breaks.

'What about having more men, troops etc on the border?'

No offense, but doing what? Allowed to apprehend, shoot to kill, what? US/Mex border is long and difficult in places. Aliens aren't dissuaded by the presence of law enforcement. Without turning the border into a free-fire zone, there is little chance of stemming the flow with just troops.

Call the Israelis.

Great point! Our countries are about the same size.

Simple: Any company employing an illegal alien faces $250,000 fine per incident, anyone renting a residence to an illegal alien forfeits that residence. Further, any illegal alien captured in the US will have a compulsory 5 years HARD labor (breaking rocks, laying tracks, etc) -- if they're caught with a weapon the sentance triples. Each repeat doubles the previous sentance. With no jobs and no housing on top of the threat of 5-15 years hard labor (breaking rocks, building highways, and digging ditches) and expulsion will take a lot of wind out of their sales.

Plow a 1-2 mile stretch of land along the border, put up fences with motion/heat/infrared/pressure/sound sensors, and have it stated policy that anyone caught within the DMZ will be given precisely one opportunity to surrender, after which soldiers or a helicopter gunship will neutralize the issue.

Very simple. Take away any motivation to come here illegaly and and replace it with a deep fear of being caught and it just won't happen anymore. Of course we need to increase sweeps, but for the most part the illegals will leave on their own to avoid the consequences. To save on the budget a bit, give them 30 days to pack their stuff, get their affairs in order and report to a deportation facility for a free bus-ride to the border crossing of their choice to start their trip back home.

ACT II: The scrapping of NAFTA.

China built a wall.

Look at China. Now look at the size of its wall.

Next silly suggestion?

...as the weeks drone on without an attack, defenses get slowly eroded and the public has a longer time window for fear to spread.

And the Dems have more time to spread the idea that Bush raised the terror alert for political reasons.

Re: Old data ... from the Newsday story:
~~~~~~~~~~~
And a U.S. official familiar with the ongoing analysis of the computer said, "There are references to other things [buildings]" in the al-Qaida computer's data, including a picture of the Bank of America building in San Francisco. "There is mention of other places."
The laptop computer was seized on July 25 following the arrest after a 12-hour gun battle of Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, who is wanted for his alleged role in the 1998 bombing of two U.S. embassies in Africa.
~~~~~~~~~~~

And the NY Times SWIIIIIIINGS ... AND MISSES!!!

Actually some reasonable suggestions, IMHO.

Now make them happen.

And exactly how would a fence keep a few terrorists out of the country? It wouldn't.
