I was born outside the United States - in Candada, where my family lived for twelve years because of my Father's employment. . .but since both my parents were American citizens; I was considered the same; (no and/if's or but's. ..).
Had an option for dual citizenship until I was twenty-one; where I then declared USA my citizenship.
So these parameters do extend beyond Military and into employment circumstances et al.
My understanding of the above is that when Kerry applied for 'Swift Boat' duty; it was considered 'relatively safe' as their patrols were not 'up close' and personal. . .as they soon became; not long after Kerry had signed up.
True or not; Kerry cannot escape an unattractive and self-serving profile in VietNam.
Kerry's four months in VietNam both complement and pale against his anti-America years post VietNam; protesting and denying this war and the soldiers who fought there.
The truth that matters is that Kerry has yet to come home to an America worth defending, by his own actions and and his own words.
Not being familiar with such things, can someone tell me whate it means that (if true) Kerry wasn't awarded some of his medals until 11 years later?
If your parents were BOTH American, you were automatically American.
This created problems for those Americans who were representatives of the US government, but who had foreign, non -American-citizen spouses, so sometime in the 1970s, I believe, the law was changed.
Now, if you are born overseas to an American citizen, that parent can register your birth with the American Embassy, and you are considered an American citizen.
I don't know the rules for children born in overseas US military hospitals, as to whether that was considered American soil or not. There are a lot of children born to American GIs who have foreign spouses. Someone here on FR must have the answer to that.
The article needs fact checking. It also left out Kerry's service prior to the swift boats on the USS Gridley.
Well, I know that my former brother-in-law was born of American citizens who were working for the defense department in Cuba and did not have to register for the draft because his parents never applied for his citizenship. He is the same age as John Kerry. Also, there was a recent flap in the news, that the local lefist legislators were touting, where a young woman, married to a GI in Germany returned with a nine month old child and was having trouble getting his citizenship papers because he was born off base.
Thanks for that odd little summary, but the link says that his mother was from France, not him.
The "member" was Scott Camil, currently a member of the Kerry presidential campaign.
Don't include me in your "come on people" comment.
I clearly stated that "natural born" includes a number of various possible eligibility test.
