Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Karl Marx who said "control the schools, control the minds of the next generation" -- or words to that effect?

i just returned from a local homeschool convention and was greatly encouraged by a talk by Andrew Pudewa (Institute for Excellence in Writing)... he urged homeschoolers to beware the "government school" mentality... many of us fall into this because of our own government education...

he highly recommended two books, The Underground History of American Education by John Taylor Gatto, and A Thomas Jefferson Education by Oliver DeMille.

Nit.

Pulling into the hotel in the pines at 7,000 ft. elevation, our soaring spirits took a nosedive when we saw the marquis, where, emblazoned in large letters, was a welcome to plunderers and economic illiterates.

They used an English nobleman for a billboard?

I have never understood how the GI Bill and Pell Grants
("federal dollars") are OK to use for private, religious
colleges, but ("federal dollars-ie: OUR money)are not OK
for sending our kids to parochial schools. Is there a big
Constitutional wall that crumbles between 11th and 12th grade? Cash and Kerry harp about more money need for college
tuition to be given away, but don't explain why colleges see the need for tution to go up 10% or more every year.
Are we getting 10% smarter kids every year in return? how
about a 10% higher grad rate?

There's an article on National Review that tells why costs are going up -- it's because of all the student loans from the government. The colleges look at it as free money and raise the tuition to raise the salaries of everyone.

The actual cost that most students pay has not gone up because they get loans/grants. It's only gone up for those parents that were responsible enough to save for our kids' college and therefore do not qualify for grants/scholarships/etc.

Well, Cantorini must have been edukated in publik skools:

"When we saw the marquis" shoud be "When we saw the marquee"

I doubt they saw a British nobleman outside the hotel...

Well, you beat me. I had to look up the correct spelling of 'marquee' to make sure I didn't make a compound error.

The Teacher's Unions and the loony left will not stop until they turn the USA into a workers paradise like Cuba. Except, unlike Cuba, their vision of paradise includes teaching your six-year old all about the perversions of the left: homosexuality, child molestation, atheism, statism, and etc. After years of tring to fight these people I've concluded that our political system is incapable of stopping them. Get used to it or lock 'n load, those seem to be our only options.

Would you settle for a ten percent increase in the number of college graduates who could discuss the Constitution, were familiar with the Bill of Rights, and could write a sentence with one subordinate clause and three words of more than two syllables?

Actually, we were both wrong. The British spelling is marquess.

Marquis is French/Italian/etc.

So I guess they used a member of the French aristocracy for a signpost.

Which really doesn't sound like a bad idea!

i can speak for the GI Bill, it is a matching voluntary fund used now as an enticement to join the military, i dont believe the viet nam era college fund program was available to be used at "non government sponsored schools" (which is very vague and still incorporates many private schools)

"According to the WEA, they include "talk show hosts, school board wannabes, disaffected parents, tax fanatics."

Isn't it interesting that "education" associations never ask themselves why the parents are disaffected? Why folks aren't happy about paying such high taxes for such lousy results? Why talk show hosts get more calls on the subject of education than just about any other they bring up? Or why everyday citizens are trying hard to overthrow entrenched school boards? No....I suppose it would be too much to ask for self-assessment. After all, what do (so-called) educators have to do with assessment?
