Just tell her not to freak out over the comments about her looks. Hell, she's probably used to it.

There's a Gainesville legend that says if a University of Florida student graduates and is still a virgin, a brick will fall from Century Tower. But what will happen if one graduates before sharing his or her first kiss? Will the Tower just crumble to pieces? Well, we'll see when political science junior Sheri Valera finishes school.

While it might seem unbelievable that this head-turning, green-eyed brunette has never kissed a boy, it's true. Valera has decided to wait until marriage to lock lips. Through her no-kissing stance, she's determined to set an example for girls to have higher standards and to wait until they meet "the one."

O&B: What's up with the no kissing policy?
Sheri: To guard my heart. It protects me emotionally and spiritually.

O&B: If a guy were to kiss you, how would you feel?
Sheri: I'd slap him because that shows he is thinking only of himself.

O&B: Don't you get the urge?
Sheri: Sure, but when I spend time with a guy, I surround myself with friends to not put myself in the situation.

O&B: Does this mean you have kissed dating goodbye as well?
Sheri: No, but the guy has to initiate it.

O&B: Do kissing scenes in movies make you squirm?
Sheri: Some movies I'm like 'Awww.' But most movies, the girl is too good for the guy. I'm like 'NOOOO! Get your hands off! R-E-S-P-E-C-T!' and want to sing Aretha Franklin.

O&B: Are you nervous about your first kiss being in front of everyone at your wedding?
Sheri: Yeah. But at the same time it will be a great encouragement to a lot of younger girls who are single.

From the Bush/Cheney 04 Official Blog site:

Florida Students: Having Fun and Re-electing the President

Students across Florida were partying for the President last night -- including this group of 30 students in summer classes at the University of Florida who took the time to show their support in celebration of President Bush's leadership.

Here are some memorable quotes from our party:

"He is a godly leader and has his head on his shoulders. For a person who is President he stands for what he believes in and isn't shallow. He doesn't sway depending on the polls but does what he thinks is right. I respect the President for that." -- Crystal Howland

"It's important for college students to be involved and stand up for what they believe. Here in Florida, we students have a lot of enthusiasm about seeing Bush reelected as President. It's a lot of fun to be here tonight." -- Leslie Veiga

"It's cool. I like talking to fellow Bush supporters. We have a lot of fun," -- Rusty Thompson.

Sheri Valera, a University of Florida senior majoring in Spanish and political science, plans on attending the Republican National Convention in August and may get a chance to speak if she wins the nationwide contest "Stand Up and Holla!"

The UF student has made the final cut in "Stand Up and Holla!," a nationwide essay contest.

niversity of Florida double major Sheri Valera calls volunteering the "core of the spirit of America," and she believes so strongly in President George Bush's call to service that she could end up speaking at the Republican National Convention.

Valera, 21, is one of 10 finalists for "Stand Up and Holla!," an essay contest to get more young people involved in elections. The contest is co-sponsored by MTV and the 2004 Republican National Convention. More than 1,000 essays from 18- to 24-year-olds were submitted.

Valera, a UF senior pursuing degrees in Spanish and political science, is the only person from Florida to make the final cut.

"It's awesome," said Valera during a telephone call Friday.

But in fact, she's already heading to the convention as a congressional delegate from Florida. Valera, state chairwoman of the College Republicans, beat out Alachua County Republican Executive Committee Chairman Travis Horn for the spot.

Yet to Valera, moving from the floor to the stage at a national convention would be a lifelong dream, she said.

"It would be great to be able to meet some of my heroes and role models," Valera said.

She hails from Gainesville — where she's registered to vote — rather than her newly established residence in Port Charlotte.

The public will decide who speaks in New York on Aug. 30. Voting is open through Aug. 9, and the winner will be announced on MTV's Total Request Live Aug. 16. To read about Valera and vote for your favorite contestant, go to http:// www.2004nycgop.org/ essaycontest/.

UF student vies for MTV trip to GOP convention
By BRIDGET CAREY
Alligator Writer

Sheri Valera hopes to stand up and holla at this year’s Republican National Convention in New York.

MTV and the Republican National Committee have teamed up as part of the station’s “Choose or Lose” campaign to create an essay contest titled “Stand Up and Holla.”

Valera, a UF senior and state chairwoman for College Republicans, is one of the 10 finalists chosen by MTV.

Visitors to MTV’s Web site can vote later this month for which finalist they believe should represent young Republicans at the convention. Voting is based on a video of each finalist performing his or her essay as a speech.

Valera gathered friends and supporters Thursday at the Alachua County Republican Party headquarters for the taping of her essay. Supporters stood behind and cheered her on, waving flags and flashing signs as she spoke behind a lectern.

Aside from her cheering fans, a cardboard cut-out of President Bush can be seen in the spirited crowd.

“I think it’ll sway the votes,” said UF business administration freshman Jason Broady, who stood next to the two-dimensional commander-in-chief in the crowd. “You got the humor factor, which is great.”

Valera’s essay had to address in 300 words or less why community service is important and what contestants have done to help their communities.

In the essay, Valera describes her belief in the importance of volunteering and her own experiences of working in a soup kitchen when a fire broke out in her town.

“It has a personal flare to it but also has a message for everyone,” Valera said after the taping.

Valera has been a member of the College Republicans since her freshman year and says she usually volunteers more than 40 hours a week to the Republican Party while taking a full course load.

“I think I’m the best to represent because I practice what I preach,” she said.

Florida is a pivotal state in this election, said Valera, and she feels that as a Floridian she would make a great representative for the 18- to 30-year-old age group.

“Just the thought of possibly being in front of thousands of people gives me the biggest rush,” she said.

If Valera wins, she will receive an all-expense-paid trip to New York to speak at the Republican National Convention and meet with party leaders in August.

“I’ve known Sheri now for a year, and she has done an incredible job as the state chair of the College Republicans,” said Jane Muir, chairwoman of the Alachua County Young Republicans and a UF art history and political science junior.

Visitors to MTV’s Web site can vote now also for finalists of the Democratic National Convention’s essay contest titled “Speak out for the Future.”
