The Yankees opened the season in Japan. Ever watched Iron Chef? They eat some pretty strange stuff over in Nippon. I've been watching that show for years, and have yet to see anybody wash his hands.

I'm thinking steroid complications. The man showed up for spring training looking much thinner and haggard. He is now saying he got ill in Japan at the season opener but I suspect otherwise.
Sounds very curable to me...not really fatal unless you live in some remote third world jungle with no medicine. Not sure why he would have to miss a substantial part of the season.

He's married, and his wife has the parasite as well. So does the Yankees' Kevin Brown. But none of them have gotten as sick as Giambi has.
Giambi was already engaged when he became a Yankee, and he was already married one time before. Steinbrenner had nothing to do with his marital status.
Well, Kevin Brown has gotten pretty darn sick. He lost 15 pounds since the beginning of the season. He's only now starting to get his strength back. Hopefully, he'll be back in the rotation soon but he's still nowhere near 100%.
Dang this is horrible. I'm not much of a baseball guy but I always liked Giambi. He played for a long time for the A's, which is about the only team I follow at all.

Also, I wonder if other Yankees got milder forms of it also. Do you remember, in the beginning of the season after the Japan trip, there was a stomach flu that a few of them had? I think Sheffield missed some games and maybe Jeter and Bernie too. I wonder if it could have been parasites but they just didn't get as sick as the others. It took weeks before they tested Giambi and then Brown specifically for parasites, because they weren't recovering.

Yes, I agree. Talk of it being "fatal" are exaggerated. I think he's been quite sick from this and will take time to recover. But I doubt he's in danger of dying.

If it is the type of parasite they're afraid it is, his quality of life is going to be far different than before, not matter what treatment.
Can you elaborate? I haven't read too much about it. Is it something that affects you for years?

...it seems possible to me that, if Giambi had been using steroids and suddenly stopped (as is the speculation) his immune system could have been weakened enough that this affected him more than it normally would.
Since he is treated now, Giambi is in better shape than most. What strikes me is that he's had this condition for months before they are finally testing him for this particular parasite. He risks possible liver and intestinal damage and also this could trigger illnesses like ulcerative colitis. That would be a nightmare.
