I don't believe it works that way. From what I've noticed, the articles march through cyberspace in chronological order. If pings to an article increased its news-worthiness, it would alter its sequence in the listing of articles. I could be wrong. That's my 2 cents.

Yes and no.
The list of articles in the right hand column IS chronological. All of the most recent topics/threads are present, each topic/thread only once..
The list of replies in the left column is also chronological, latest reply on top, and the user decides how many (usually either 50 or 100) are displayed. Any given thread may have as many replies listed as possible.
So a "ping" (which is of course, a reply) bumps the thread back to the top of the displayed list. But it doesn't change the thread listing on the right.
