Jorge Castaneda acknowledges the unprecedented character of Hispanic immigration. Mexican immigration, he wrote recently, does have distinctive traits that do make [assimilation] difficult, if not impossible. This is . . . a matter of history. That history holds that the U.S. robbed Mexico of its natural territory in the nineteenth century, as some Mexican immigrants never seem to forget. Its kind of scary, says Santa Ana gang intervention officer Mona Ruiz. I hear, I was here first; this used to be Mexico. You stole it from us. Mexican-American Ruiz is herself called a traitor for becoming Americanized.

To quote another poster, WELCOME TO THE CLINTON/BUSH/KERRY VISION FOR AMERICA. It seems to me the Republicans are reaching out to these Hispanics who, because of their "great conservative family values" should be "natural Republicans." Isn't that what our Republican leaders keep telling us?

I tried to knock the Spanglish accent out of my niece and get rid of that crap, he says. But the mother was completely nihilistic about her child. Its going to take direct action from Americans to Americanize Hispanics.
Riiiiiight, like that wouldn't be taken as base white racism.
It's a bit late for American cultural help. La Raza has seen to that.
Sooner or later there are going to be armed American enclaves and bastions (or whatever gated communities morph into).
I don't think the people living there now realize they will be thrown out by the remnants of the American People.
I really wish I could be more optimistic. I will continue to pray that I am horribly wrong.

BTTT. Nobody is touching this one. Heather MacDonald was also the author of "The Illegal Alien Crime Wave", another FR favorite.

Yes, I also noticed a distinct absence of the happy talkers on this thread.
Move along, nothing to see here...

Funny. No mention of this happening where Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, or any other Massachusetts liberal lives... I believe they ship in foreign nationals from Western and Eastern Europe to do their dirty work.
Maybe someone else could elaborate.

Anyone who is pro-illegal immigrants in these post 9/11 days is a traitor, corrupt, and/or mentally unbalanced. That would be the majority of our elected officials.

I hate to say it, but given our current and prospective crop of politicians, I think we have passed the tilt point. We have lost the country, and it is time to come up with Plan B. In fact, Plan B probably won't work, and we need a Plan C or a Plan D to save whatever can be saved. Militarize the border. Mass deportations.
That's my plan A.
But then I'm not the POTUS

As a lifelong resident of California, I can honestly say that this is the most accurately written article about illegal aliens I've ever read. From a Texas perspective, I agree. A well written article.
Too bad you'll never see this in USA Today.

It's too bad that so many immigrants (illegal and legal) are not assimilating to American culture and not embracing American morals and values. . A cessation of the present flood would encourage assimilation.
But there's no end in sight.

I humbly disagree. Americans don't have the gonads to defend Western culture. Defense of the culture that the Founding Fathers gave us has been beaten out of us. We accept African, Latin, and Lord knows what other culture as equal or better than the Western culture that our country was founded on. The most wonderful country on earth, the shining star of humanity is going down the $hitter and we do nothing to try and stop the descent. Bush and Kerry would only grease the slippery slope. I detest them both.
To: gubamyster
Isn't that what our Republican leaders keep telling us? They're lying to America, and the Republicans in the border states (and now other states) know they're lying.
