The AP article got a statement from John Edwards but did not bother to ask him why he didn't vote if it was so important to him.
Translation: Little Johnny is all for gay marriage. I can see how that plays with blue-collar Democrats and in flyover country.

DES MOINES, Iowa, July 14 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Sen. John Edwards released the following statement today, regarding the Federal Marriage Amendment:
"The Constitution should never be used as a political tool to divide Americans. I am proud that that shared ideal was strengthened today in the United States Senate by Republicans and Democrats alike because no one should be allowed to use the Constitution for political gain. If this amendment had reached a final vote, I would have voted against it because it is wrong to govern that way.
"We have so much work to do in our country and I believe that our priorities and focus should be on those challenges we want to tackle together: creating new jobs that have better pay and real benefits, giving middle class families a tax cut so they can save for college and pay for health care, and doing more to win the war on terror and to strengthen our homeland defense and support our firefighters, police offices and EMT's. It is time for all of us to work together and meet our greatest challenges so that America is once again stronger at home and respected in the world."

Paid for by John Kerry for President, Inc.
edwards only sees the BIG $$$$ when he gets to SUE!
Lawyers need to be, shall we say, made to be extremely endangered species??
We Republicanbs have some Rinos that need clearing, out I havent see the list but can I assume its the usual Guilty parties led by John McPain?
"If this amendment had reached a final vote, I would have voted against it because it is wrong to govern that way."
translation: "I didn't vote before I didn't vote for it."
"Speaking at a rally in Des Moines, Iowa, John Edwards said Democratic and Republican senators had joined together to 'reject the politics of division.'"
"Edwards accused President Bush and Vice President Cheney of trying ot use the Constitution as a 'political tool.'"
Edwards' statements can only show what hypocrites the Democrats are (now there's a new name for members of the Donkey Party: HYPOCRATS).
what the media is desperatly trying to cover up (INCLUDING FOX) is that this issue IS NOT DEAD.
The FMA can and SHALL be brought back.
It now becomes a question of who will defend marriage now.
Kerry will kill it.
Bush will pass it.
It does end division, it brings MORE people to the Republican/Bush side. It makes Edwards the "gay" candidate. (and I don't mean happy) Perhaps he now knows what it is to be kerry's female dog.
"The politics of division", huh? How much gall does this take? A small cadre of radical homosexual activists go forum shopping (and they do love shopping) and find a couple of like-minded judges ready to overturn hundreds of years of legal precedent and thousands of years of human history, and when met with resistance from ordinary citizens trying to defend themselves against this onslaught-they charge them with "divisiveness". I could tell them what they can do with their "Politics of Division" but they'd probably consider it solicitation.
What a bunch of cowards. I hope the Republicans come up with a good ad on this decision not to vote on FMA.
These guys are spineless, flip-floppers.
Senate rejects move to ban same-sex marriage (Not support Families)
Pretty much broke along party lines:
Republicans for (except Sununu (R-NH), Snowe (R-ME), Campbell (R-CO), & Chafee (R-RI))
Democrats against (except Miller (D-GA), Byrd (D-WV))
Independents against - Jeffords (I-VT)
NO VOTE CAST: Edwards (D-NC) Kerry (D-MA)
Agreed. They should brought it for a straight up or down vote as the Democrats originally agreed to. The I would have been delighted to see the Two Johns twist slowly in the wind.
"We don't need no stinkin' details. We are just here to stroke you." (spoken in a tiny mexican AP voice)
"Edwards accused President Bush and Vice President Cheney of trying ot use the Constitution as a 'political tool.'"
what a dumb comment!
All our laws are a 'politic tool' that why they call the legislature a 'political office' and the work these guys do "politics".
And the Constitution? It's the governing political document for our country. If it can talk about patents and letters of marque and whether troops can live in our houses and 'full faith and credit', it sure can talk about marriage without getting sullied.
he sounds like a bozo at the water cooler complaining about actually having to do *work* for his paycheck.
"If this amendment had reached a final vote, I would have voted against it because it is wrong to govern that way."
Translation: "I didn't vote before I didn't vote for it."
WOW... very party line vote.
I am disappointed in Sununu. Who'd a thunk he'd take the RINO route, he is normally very solid.
The other RINO defections dont surprise me ... BUT, it does surprise me that the whole Democrat party stood firm as a shield for the anti-family side. Tells me we didnt get the heat level raised enough.
He can criticise the vote, but doesn't even show up for it. Only a Democrat...
This should be considered a vote for filth.
If only the GOP was not stupid enough to use this gift as a club to beat over the heads of democrats.
Kinda interesting that the Johns will get their vote, even though they didn't get the Johns' vote. Go figya!
