Actually the term UGLY AMERICAN was misappropriated

It was the title in one of a group of stories in a book which took its title from that story

All the stories were about fighting communism and helping the people of SE ASIA

The UGLY AMERICAN was really a term of endearment that the people of the country used to descibe a BIG RED HEADED FRECKLED IRISH AMERICAN who was beloved for aiding the people

Another story in the group of stories was made into the Movie THE UGLY AMERICAN

It was from this movie that the term became misused
