There was an interesting show on NOVA about it. It is clear from the geologic evidence, for example the Mid-Atlantic rift, that these reversals are periodic occurances. The cool thing is one would see the Northern Lights in lower latitudes. There would be an uptick in skin cancer rates but nothing catastrophic. The animal issue is interesting since this has happened before and the animals have been able to adopt.

The cool thing is one would see the Northern Lights in lower latitudes. Somewhat, but the intensity would be dispersed.

I am a firm believer in my own (brilliant) theory that we pass through many phases in reality. Primarily these can be described as times of more... stuff, yeah, that's it, stuff... and times of less stuff. We are leaving a time of less stuff that has lasted for several thousand years, and about to enter times of MORE stuff. Prepare to duck and cover, folks.

Broad claims: "A reversal could knock out power grids, hurt astronauts and satellites, widen atmospheric ozone holes, send polar auroras flashing to the equator and confuse birds, fish and migratory animals that rely on the steadiness of the magnetic field as a navigation aid." We're doomed! Doomed, I tell you! And it's all because of George W. Bush.

There's a GREAT "Disaster Novel" called, "The HAB THEORY" which deals, peripherally, with this---would make a GREAT movie!!

Is this different from global warming (or cooling, I forget which is more important at the moment). It will surely screw up all our magnetic compasses, and lead to outbreaks of acne in middle-aged men.
Women and children, however, will have steadily clearer complexions.

The animal issue is interesting since this has happened before and the animals have been able to adopt. And only those animals that had been rendered infertile would need to adopt.

Science reporter Bill Broad has filed a report, OK, but I think I'll wait till I see what Bill Nye, the Science Guy says.

Back in Feb, 10,000 birds mysteriously fell from the sky in a province of China.
I recall a FReeper mentioning the magnetic field on that thread... sw
