There was an interesting show on NOVA about it. It is clear from the geologic evidence, for example the Mid-Atlantic rift, that these reversals are periodic occurances. The cool thing is one would see the Northern Lights in lower latitudes. There would be an uptick in skin cancer rates but nothing catastrophic. The animal issue is interesting since this has happened before and the animals have been able to adopt.

The collapse of the earth's magnetic field, which both guards the planet and guides many of its creatures, appears to have started in earnest about 150 years ago, the NY TIMES is planning to report on Page Ones Tuesday.Bush and Halliburton are obviously behind this.

animals have been able to adopt. Adopt? I've heard of animal rights but this is rediculous. Who's representing the critters in those proceedings?

There have been countless reversals in history and none have been correlated with an extinction event.
Just an FYI.

"A reversal could knock out power grids ... only if it happened all at once (unlikely)
hurt astronauts and satellites i.e., raise near-earth radiation--an adaptable problem
widen atmospheric ozone holes...probably,
send polar auroras flashing to the equator,...whoa, colors...cool!
and confuse birds, fish and migratory animals that rely on the steadiness of the magnetic field as a navigation aid... so vote Democratic? They can't do anything about it either--it's bigger than both of us!

Broad claims: "A reversal could knock out power grids, hurt astronauts and satellites, widen atmospheric ozone holes, send polar auroras flashing to the equator and confuse birds, fish and migratory animals that rely on the steadiness of the magnetic field as a navigation aid."
Okay. Will it stop gay pride parades?

You really have to wonder what is up at the NYSlimes.

If you look at the article referenced above, you see we are statistically way overdue for a pole reversal. I put this in the same category as 'hey the sun heats up the earth' news flash.
Good thing we have GPS, but can we miniaturize it in time to save the birds and animals.

Personally I think it is Al Gore's fault. After all he invented the earths magnetic field, didn't he?????
