Oh for pete's sake. "In the hands of a foreign power"? You sound like one of those wild-eyed Catholic conspiracy mongers so prevelent anymore on this forum.
Rather, I think the church is cutting off its nose to spite its face,
No, only reiterating a timeless truth. "Separation of church and state" isn't the Church's concern.
as now people have to wonder if an office holder who belongs to that religious denomination will follow the will of the foreign power and not his constituents so as not to lose the right to participate in an important religious ritual that may, in his belief, lead the way to a more pleasant afterlife.
If any politician's constituents are unhappy with his job performance, they have a remedy. Again, what's all this foreign power nonsense? What of a Baptist politician who is pro-life? Is his pro-life stance okay with you, because he "thought it up himself"? I get the distinct feeling you're more impressed with Kerry for being a defiant Catholic than any fear he's beholded to a "foreign power." A Catholic in Kerry's position -- namely, that which is openly, defiantly, and proudly contradictory of the Church's teaching on abortion and how that relates to the Communion -- arguably does himself more harm by taking Communion than by not. That's his choice. And if he believes separating himself from Communion endangers his, as you say "more pleasant afterlife", then he better start thinking about the choices he's making.
A Catholic politician must act in a way that the Catholic Church teaches is just. If the voters don't like it, they can vote him out of office.
What is not acceptable is a politician who insists on promoting laws that the Catholic Church teaches are criminal, and insisting that he is nevertheless a Catholic.
So, you don't have to worry: You can vote anyone out of office if you don't like what he does.
Does anybody here know if Joe Biden has voted for taxpayer paid abortions or partial birth abortion? I ask this because when I visit my in-laws in DE I often see the Senator at mass at St. Joeseph's on the Brandywine.
