- Playstation 2 w/two 8MB memory cards, 1 DualShock2 controller, 1 wireless controller, remote control and IR module, all cords/cables, and 10 games (cunningly disguised as DVDs).
- Copy of Unfit for Command (Swift Boat Veterans) and American Soldier (GEN Tommy Franks).
- 12 bags of beef jerky (commercial) (nine 8-ounce paks, three 4-ounce paks, various flavors). (Product was taste-tested and deemed pretty doggoned good by yours truly). And there'll be more of this coming - I have a local source who is vulnerable to "blackmail", and his beef jerky is primo.
- 16 microwave popcorn (Artery Clogger w/Extra Butter) and 6 caramel popcorn.
- 10 oz bag pistachios (domestic - I don't buy from Iran any more).
- This week's Time and Sports Illustrated magazines.
WOW! you've definitely gone ape.
We could do chimp choocahs together.
I hope the pistachios came from my Central Valley of California.
Nuts are heavy. Wait till you see your shipping costs. Then you can come and cry on my shoulder and feel proud at the same time.
Brag again Monday after this is mailed. You deserve at least two brag sessions for this much stuff!
Fabulous!
Anyway you could redirect the tapes of the convention to Bagram?
I've already mailed tapes to Kirkuk. It included Kerry's midnight madness speech.
Did you see the books on asgardshill's list? LOL!
I sent Bagram printouts of the main speeches, but hearing them will be much more effective.
Ping to my care package thread.
Glad you understood my tagline.
I have a special place in my heart for our service members since my foster father died in the line of duty in 1965.
Yes indeedy. Golden Orchards California Pistachios (although the manufacturer's address is a PO Box in LA). I used to buy only Iranian pistachios (and you can get them much cheaper than these), but this is one boycott I'm proud to uphold.
The books were a happy accident. I had cancelled my preorder of Unfit For Command with Borders when I found a copy elsewhere last week, but they lost the request and the book was there today with my name, so I grabbed it and American Soldier. I had no problem with shunting a few extra bucks toward the SBV - they've earned it.
The REALLY heavy stuff comes in the next shipment (Power Bars). About 4 pounds per case (and I'm saving my shekels as we speak).
Power Bars are costly suckers, even at wholesale bulk prices, and candy bars are real expensive to mail because of the weight.
My hat's off to you!!
bump
(And, the first case of Power Bars is on its way - I should get it next week. I'll "evaluate" them then get some more if they wind up being suitable).
Generally several weeks for Iraq, and 10-14 days for Afghanistan. Can be more when they are off fighting or hip deep in local school projects or sick in hospital or on leave.
I'll follow up with email addresses I have. Meanwhile, we have a letter from Kirkuk, which I'll post next.
Hope it makes it OK and that somebody is there to pick it up. At this rate, the Power Bars will be on the way by the time they get this box.
Letter from KIRKUK!
26 Aug04
Dear Patricia,
thank you for this latest box of goodies and the wonderful letter from your Tholian buddy Thor.
I can see that this does bring much fun and laughter to you and your friends. I can assure you that it also keeps the morale up & it helps us to pass the time. I have individuals that really appreciate certain things like the Westerns and the James Bond's & the 24's these DVD's and the Books circulate with in their circles and their seems to be something for most everyone.
I now must get bookshelves built and installed to hold all of the books and magazines we now have available. When we actually do leave here, the follow-on unit will still be able to benefit from the out-pouring of your group, and others like you.
thank you for all you do,
C****
"Generally several weeks for Iraq, and 10-14 days for Afghanistan. "
Are you sending packages Priority Mail? It should only take 8-14 days to Iraq with Priority Mail, according to what I've read.
Keep up the good work! I'm sure your efforts are a great blessing to our troops!
First the USPS has to deliver it to the Army staging area, and they are mailed priority, but many are mailed by me on the West Coast, which gives a couple day delay. Then it has to wait for space available on an Army flight out. Then it has to be sorted in Kuwait. Then it has to go on space available on a convoy. Some places are more remote in Iraq and take longer to get to. Then we have to wait for a response which may indicate how long ago it got there.
I think letters go faster than the big care packages we send.
However, so far most of it seems to make it. (We did have one package slashed open and computer games removed.)
Glad to see it's cheaper to send from Texas than from California. MJY1288 in Maryland has the cheapest postage bills.
M, what were your postage for the DVD for Bagram and the books for Kirkuk?
It was $350.00 :-)
$9 and $21
Thank you!
Mr. and Mrs. Diamondhead gave me a big box of goodies at the FReeper picnic Saturday. And I still have a couple boxes of books and some perfumes to mail.
And I picked up some DVD's at reduced prices at WalMart, and ordered some cases of toffee popcorn that had been such a hit in Kirkuk.
Thank Heaven you and DrDeb and asgardshill and Mo1 are doing some heavy lifting with the mailing.
(We've got to quit meeting like this)
And the Bagram box is being put together now. It'll be markedly similar to the Kirkuk package except it'll have more beef jerky and the Power Bars (when the rest show up here).
