You're right that space colonization will be extremely robotic at first, but people up there too could happen much quicker than you say.

People working on the space elevator say it can be built in 10-15 years. I think it will take longer than that, but it will likely happen in our lifetimes. Then lots more space elevators will pop up around the equator. I remember reading that it will be 100 dollars a pound to geosynchronous orbit.

With that kind of price reduction it won't be impossible to get into space and to get useful stuff into space.

And once your in orbit, your halfway to anywhere in the solar system.

Three major issues come immediately to mind concerning space privatization. Space as an environment, space law, and profit in space.

This should have been the end of the article.
None are valid questions, except to the dyed-in-the-wool Fascist, in the political sense of the word (not in the sense that Bevis and Butthead talk radio uses it.

Earth "environment" is a bogus debate topic, doubly so "space".
Profit in space hurts whom? How? Redistribution and class warfare in a new clown suit. Space law has as much relevance as "internationa law"; in other words, none at all.

So, if we are to have private property in outer space, and orderly development, we ought to consider whether a kind of crown charter, or a gov't lease or patent might do the job that needs doing.

Your right, it might be like the Law of the Sea, or western settlements (hopefully at least).

As far as charters, leases, etc., I'm hoping that they are, from a financial point of view, ceremonial, i.e. $1.00 or $10.00, or the cost of printing up the lease/charter/whatever.

A lot of politicians look at private space development as more money they can tax, and I really think that because of the costs involved, the companies/individuals need all the breaks they can get.

Right, following our own historical example the lease, permit, or patent would have a nominal filing fee. $10

The Feds would realize revenue when the, e.g., Phoebe mines begin to produce. Since the materials would have to go to another space base or to earth, and the gov't would have its tentacles into a space base just like on earth, they could find a way to tax the operation.

It's like the ANWR deals, most of the debate concerns how the revenues from leases will be spent, on which Federal programs. They get their revenue, and we get private property rights.
