Just watch out for the system restore feature in xp - it can make removing spyware a pain until you remember to turn it off.

Run both. I have been for the better part of 7 months on an XP machine.

""we run both, but there is some kind of little bugger my wife can not get rid of."

When you scan with Adaware does it show up as a registry key file?...you delete it and it shows up on the next scan? If so then it could be sahagent.

I could not get rid of that bugger until earlier this month when an adaware update was available to kill it.

Update your adaware then reboot and scan the disk. It should delete it for good this time.

If you want to catch a lot that both AdAware and SpyBot miss, then buy Pest Patrol.

Running both with XPHome without any problems! (as well as AVG anti-virus)

Sinner, I appreciate the offer, but the post right after yours looks like the answer.

Thank you both.

I regularly run Ad-Aware and Spybot, but I recently had a bout with a nasty Cool Web variant that neither program could do anything with, it would just reinstall itself after a system reboot. I used CWShredder and got rid of it and installed and ran Spyware Blaster (a good preventative tool). I also installed all of the recommended security patches from Microsoft and have had no further issues since.

Glad I could help. There is a way to make Spybot ignore this problem; first make sure you're in advanced mode under the "Mode" menu option:

1) Click Settings
2) Click "Ignore Products"
3) Click DSO under the "Security" tab or the "All Products" list.

Another way is to change the registry, but unless another FReeper corrects me, I don't see a real need to do this. Just make sure you're fully patched!

I don't have a "Mode" menu option on my Spybot. In fact, the only menu options I have are "File", "Language", and "Help." How do I get to a "Settings" menu?

Many thanks.

I work in an IT department that supports 500+ users. We run both simultaneously. Our employees have a bad habid of downloading and installing things from the internet. Soon that will be a thing of the past.

What version of Spybot are you using? The latest edition is v.1.3.

I have version 1.2, but the program tells me no newer updates are available.

Doesn't the update process install new versions, or must I download and reinstall each new version?

Are you saying you should go in and disable System Restore, run AdAware and/or SpyBot...delete or quarantine the results and THEN turn System Restore back on?

Unfortunately, Spybot doesn't appear to work that way. If you're running v.1.2, you've been abandoned according to the following site:

http://netsquirrel.com/announcements/newspybot.html

Here is one of the sites where you can download the new edition after uninstalling the old one:

Yep. Otherwise the system restore puts it back. Doh!
