First step: learn French and Arabic. Ms. Redgrave will then be able to understand you.

Don't low whether this has been mentioned, but her younger sister, actress Lyn Redgrave, appears to be "normal" and has long been an American citizen.

She's been like this since before Blow Up.

Great! Thanks for bringing up a more pleasant, more positive Redgrave name - didn't know that Lynn Redgrave was an American citizen. She is a great actress.

Thanks for mentioning that film, Wardaddy and for giving a rough estimate time reference for the beginning of Vanessa Redgrave's insanity.

"Blowup" was released in 1966, and according to the boards at IMDb, the Yardbirds featuring Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, have a cameo appearance in this.

Other than the discussion of Jimmy Page singing and playing a Telecaster in the movie, a few comments are worthwhile reading: "God Awful Movie," "Austin Powers without the laughs" and one comment claims that this movie greatly influenced Francis and Sofia Coppola.

Blow Up was a bit of a sensational flick at the time with some nudity (Vanessa) and the rock angle....had a tiny cult following.

All about a murder in Hyde Park picked up by accident on film...more or less.

Veraushka and Sarah Miles ( and loads of MOD models) both were in it too....wow, I was a kid...I just thought it was weird with good music and some salaciousness (for the time)

Veraushka lounging..lol

Thanks for this discussion, WD. Was just reading a bit about "Blow-up." It was based on a short story. There's also some vague reference to Plato's "The Cave."

This makes me wonder if Lynn Redgrave's selection of roles accelerated her descent into madness. Imagine her in Bergman's "Fanny & Alexander," or for that matter, any Bergman movie.

Wasn't Eva Braun also an actress?

Varushka, whatever happened to her? She was a pioneer anorexic, I think she predated the Twiggy phenomenon.

Of course I simply heard about the 60s from my Great Grandparents, and of course read about the 60s in old copies of Look and Life Magazines. ;-)

That's a great photo find, too, Wardaddy.

Wondering about Hemmings, now, wasn't he in a lot of movies and TV shows during that time? Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock, etc.?

I was gonna tell you to check the pic's properties to go that site...lots of stills from the film.

I was 11 years old or 6th grade I think when the film ran here...it came on late at night on occasion all thru high school.

It was considered a hip film then...now it seems so dated.

I haven't thought about Hemmings in a while....my memory had me placing Malcolm Mcdowell or Terence Stamp in the film instead....first time I've researched Blow Up on the web actually.

Great site of photos, thanks Wardaddy!

Hemmings was a noted singer in childhood, with Benjamin Britten composing "Turn of the Screw" for David Hemmings' gifted soprano. Heady stuff for a kid.

David Hemmings with his adoring fans.

He continued acting, became a director and most recently acted in the movies "Gladiator," "Spy Game," "Gangs of New York," "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen."

For television here are just a few shows he directed: "A-Team," "Murder She Wrote," "Magnum P.I.," "Quantum Leap," "In the Heat of the Night," "Stingray," and "Raven."

David Hemmings was 62 when he suffered a heart attack and passed away in December 2003. He is survived by his wife and six children.

This has been an interesting side trip for me making it a much more positive topic than the original article posted.

What'shername seems less significant in comparison. Thanks Wardaddy!

And Wardaddy?

To answer my own question: yes, Redgrave might have lost a few bearings on this film. It sounds like a wacko script and maybe Redgrave became her role, rather than just acting it.

The question: Why do animal rights activists protest old ladies in fur coats rather than motorcycle gangs in leather?

The answer is obvious. It's much safer.

This is the nature of the strident protesting Left in today's society. It's much safer to stick your neck out protesting the government of your own free society. Even as they decry the 'fascist' tactics of the Bush administration and the way they 'crush anyone who disagrees with them,' they continue to protest because they KNOW that's a lie and that they can do so with impunity, not be rounded up and put in camps as they are alleging.

What Vanessa Arafat and her ilk are up to are based on the same cowardice-- their view of 'justice' is only for the safe target. They don't protest what they know are the genuine forces of centered, unconvinceable evil, they protest the safe target and wrap themselves in a concern for the 'underdog.' (Of course, if that were true, is there a greater underdog on the world stage than Israel?)

'possum over and out.

If your job is pretending to be in a fantasy, then maybe eventually many of them lose touch with reality.

I'm confused. Relatives of those detained at Gitmo are allowed to visit? Has Vanessa been to Gitmo? How do they know the conditions are horrible? Who's telling them the conditions are horrible? Are the prisoners writing letters home? We're to believe what a sack of crap terrorist says about the conditions? Like I said, I'm very confused.
