One of my grandmas lived in Nevada years ago. She was a French-Basque immigrant from the south of France. And she was an ardent Republican! But 2 of her kids(my aunts), were Dems. My Mom said they had some uh "spirited" political discussions! Of course, they were more of the moderate-to-conservative type Dems; but they had some funny verbal battles when they got together!

Do any Freepers from Nevada remember knowing about/learning about, an old Republican senator from Nevada many years ago; his name was McCarran(sp?)? I know there is a Blvd. in Reno named after him. My Mom grew up in a small town close to Reno, (Fernley) she said she remembered this old senator. She said congressman Henry Hyde reminded her of him a lot. She said when he went out campaigning, he would come through her town, and stay in her Mom's hotel!

Another Nevada senator my Mom spoke of was named Laxalt, Robert(I think he was the senator!). I believe he had a brother too, Paul(maybe he was the senator). Anyway, the one who was a senator campaigned for President Reagan back when he was running for president, so I'd heard or read. These brothers were F.Basques, also!

Not bad, we can live with that, but where do you slot Rudy?

Junior Senator from New York - until we get rid of Schmuck Chumer. Then he'd be senior Senator.

I've been here only 8 years, so I'm still learning Nevada history.

You're right, though, McCarran was very influential and well liked in Nevada...the airport in Las Vegas is named after him. Laxalt (Paul) was the beloved and influential Senator and friend of Pres. Regan. The Laxalt family is still very influential in the state.

Northern Nevada is big Basque country...great people and better food:^) John Ascuaga is Basqu and a long time Nevada resident and is the most beloved businessman in Northern Nevada (he owns a casino, John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks).

I think if he is running against Reid, I'm for him.

Funny, but a little too crude for this President, and below Dubya...klinton, on the other hand would have had to climb up out of the mire to make such a crude comment.
