Looks like a bookmarkable thread for yours truly, suitable for referencing the next time there's some ill-considerd Hitchens lovefest on this site.

Someone filled with hatred for both Mother Theresa and Ronald Reagan who is cheered by some on this site?

Truth is stranger than fiction, indeed.

Hitchens is often a very scathingly funny and/or insightful writer who I sometimes agree with and sometimes disagree with.

I disagree 100% with his views on Ronald Reagan.

I don't know why you feel the need to ensure that everybody is in lockstep agreement their assessment of Hitchens. Seems an odd crusade.

There is a difference between Buchanan and Hitchens. Buchanan is nasty to the Republican Party and basically works to help the Democrats. He's done for the Democrats what Nader does for us. Hitchens is funny some times and trenchant, and he's frequently very hateful. But he is largely inconsequential in election politics.

I'd love to drink a bottle of bourbon with Hitchens and debate until one of us passed out. I have no sympathy for his causes, but I believe he has the sort of integrity completely absent in most Leftists. Of course he thinks Reagan was stupid; the alternative is a complete refutation of everything Hitchens believes in. It's intellectual self-preservation.

Imagine if Bill Clinton solved all of our country's ills by implementing racial quotas, same-sex marriages, raising taxes, and decimating the military. What on earth would we say? Luckily, we are not in the position the Left finds itself in; we get to say "I told you so".

In the Oval Office, Ronald Reagan told Yitzhak Shamir and Simon Wiesenthal, on two separate occasions, that he himself had assisted personally at the liberation of the Nazi death camps.

This is pretty pathetic, if true.

The man is not even in the grave yet and liberals like Hitchens fail miserably to have any respect for the dead.

I pity those sorry excuses for human beings.

God bless and keep Ronald Reagan, a great man and an even great POUS.

Hitchens takes a not too shabby shot at kerry in the same writing:

Sen. John Kerry waited until the first week of June 2004 to tell us that he met Ahmad Chalabi in London in 1998 and that he didn't care for him then. That makes six intervening years in which the senator could have alerted us to this lurking danger to national security. But something kept him quiet. One must hope that that something wasn't the tendency to pile on. Cheer up, though. At least this shows that Kerry has no pre-emptive capacity.

What,(besides 3 fingers of anything in a dirty glass) or who, does Hitchens like...if anything/anybody ?

It really doesn't matter what Hitchens, or Pelosi, or DU, or Slate, or any of the other hate-filled liberals say about Ronald Reagan, not at all.

Watch all this week at the ceremonies surrounding President Reagan's death; you will see America's best, and her worst.

It's no secret that liberal think in terms of "groups"...everything has to be "grouped" for them to understand it; or in clinton's case "groped".

Anyway, the liberals' "group" talking points are in play, not so much to demean Reagan directly, but to bash conservatism in general. The left KNOWS that President Reagan garnered love and admiration from both the left and the right.

The democRATs are afraid that a new generation might hear the things, again, that made Ronald Reagan great...and the new generation might have their eyes opened to the truth. And here with lord eff'n of Ketchup is fighting for his political life, they don't want any positives showing on the right.

But as we watch the solemn proceedings this week, we will see the outpouring of grief, admiration, and respect that will be shown to a great man, by ordinary American people...that's what counts.

It's not the slings and barb's thrown by liberals in liberal soundbites on liberal networks and newspapers...it's the average American. That's who Ronald Reagan appealed to, and that's who really counts.

Like a shunned schoolgirl, idiots like Nancy Pelosi can't abide the right getting attention or credit for anything, and like a scared schoolgirl being chaired by a mouse, she swats at everything that doesn't look like her.

This guy, Hitchens; well, reading his stuff he is seething with hatred; there is no intelligence, no insight, and no talent as a journalist showing there...only hatred. The very thing that the left accuses the right of constantly - hatred - exudes from their every being each time they speak.

Whether or not Nancy Pelosi, Hitchens or any other of the hate-filled leftists drop their flag at half-mast - while shameful and unpatriotic - is of no consequence to me...BUT I AM LOWERING MY FLAG TO HALF MAST, along with millions of other everyday Americans...Republican and DemocRAT alike.

What is astounding is, if President Reagan were still alive, and President, he would have been most polite, and gracious to Ms. Pelosi. Liberals have no class, no couth, and no upbringing.

Eventually liberals return to their natural state. Hitchens was good for a few years when he bashed Clinton. Let him go back to the bottle. I wonder how many defenders he still has on this site.

Hitchens loves one thing: Hitchens. I find it mildly entertaining at times and even somewhat informative once in a while (a recent Vanity Fair article about the simmering cauldron that is Indonesia, for one).

BUT, I also know going in that he is an angry, drunken, megalomaniac. He criticizes everyone and everything, b/c it sells.

Ronald Reagan professed to be annoyed when people called it "Star Wars," even though he had ended his speech on the subject with the lame quip, "May the force be with you."

Well THAT certainly was worth obsessing over for 20 years.

President Reagan would forgive Hitchens, but I will not!

I would really like to kick his rear - displacing it to somewhere between his ears.

Was it true that his staff in the 1980 debates had stolen President Carter's briefing book? (They had.)

What an outright lie! Where on earth Did Hitchens get the idea that Reagan used Carter's Debate Book to prep for the 1980 Debates.

Pure Hogwash!

But let's get back to the subject at hand...refuting Hitchens, not bashing him.

Almost point by point, Hitchens is nitpicking:

1. Reagan had been misinformed about a word in the Russian language.

2. Quibbles about a lame jokeline, "may the force be with you".

3. Didn't like it that Reagan believed, spoke, and spooked non-believers, about the Biblical Armageddon.

4. In the Oval Office, Ronald Reagan told Yitzhak Shamir and Simon Wiesenthal, on two separate occasions, that he himself had assisted personally at the liberation of the Nazi death camps.(I've got an expert working on the truth of this one.)

5. Hitchens nitpicks again, between his term "South African leadership", and Reagan's "apartheid South Africa".

6. Lebanon was a debacle. Ok, let's give Hitchens that the middle east under Reagan was a cauldron of trouble, for us, and for the world. Let's own up to the fact that Reagan made mistakes, missteps, and had errors in judgement and faulty advice. Name a president who hasn't!

None of that justifies Hitchens' vitriolic, personal attack on President Reagan, before he is laid to rest.
cruel and stupid lizard
rictus of senile fury
dumb as a stump
a obvious phony and loon

But really, these insults are little bee stings, just Hitch playing bitch... for what? Attention? Controversy? He loves both, you know. And oh how we ate it up when Clinton was the recipient!

But Hitchens' real dagger to the heart, he reserves for his friends, his left of center American intellectual friends who thought Carter or Mondale or Dukakis or Bentson bested Reagan in any way.

Hitchens:"not that there are any non-ballistic missiles—a corruption of language that isn't his fault"

Proof that Hitchens is an idiot. There are plenty of non-ballistic missiles, (like the sparrow , hellfire or any cruise missile.) A ballistic missile has the defining characteristic, that it falls in a ballistic path after the power shuts off. Similar to when an artillery shell leaves the barrel.

What a complete boob. Shows himself to be an idiot, while he tries to call someone an idiot.

Christopher Hitchens was an a$$hole when I met him and he still is today.

Hitchens isn't qualified to lick the horse crap off President Reagan's boots.

Hitchens' one redeeming emotion is that he understands the War on Terror. It is unfortunate that he fails to understand Reagan's historical importance.

He could have had anyone in the world to dinner, any night of the week, but took most of his meals on a White House TV tray.

Yet look at all he accomplished and the people who saw freedom during his term.

What have you accomplished Hitchens?

It is a nasty piece, he can be a particularly vicious man (although his writing more often than not, has a touch of the Dentata in it, if you know what I mean), and this piece isn't even really that well written, but I do have one question:

In the Oval Office, Ronald Reagan told Yitzhak Shamir and Simon Wiesenthal, on two separate occasions, that he himself had assisted personally at the liberation of the Nazi death camps.

Is this true?
