Its pretty easy:
1. Patch your computer www.windowsupdate.com
2. Keep your antivirus software up to date
3. Download a firewall ie. zone alarm, its fee
4. Download adaware and spybot.
Its simple. Your computer SHOULD automatically download and update both windowsupdate files and antivirus files.
Thanks for posting this.
When is the government going to get serious about finding and prosecuting the people who create these viruses? I saw an article a while back about the prosecution record against these individuals; I forget the details, but it was pathetic. There should be a minimum 10 year sentence for these people, not just a slap on the wrist. These a**holes are worse than bank robbers - they do far more damage.
OK, if this is sending information somewhere, why can't they track it and arrest some people.
Problem is, your average MS patch opens up more holes than it closes. For the folks who get viruses, the better solution is to go back to using Windows 98, which does pretty much all the same things, is as or more stable, runs faster, and is less vulnerable to attacks. Win98+software firewall+virus scanner is all one needs, no patching or updates.
Because if the author has any sense whatsoever, the info is sent to a place owned by a 3rd party who has no idea it's happening, which the virus author can check from time to time to grab the info. Actually, it can be masked by any number of "hops", and the virus author can also pose as an innocent victim himself if he's caught in suspicious activity.
You can also get a freeware program that prompts you every time something tries to write to your registry.
where.
The new spybot search & destroy available here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download
has a program that sits in your task bar and will warn you if anything changes in your registry.
already got a patch loaded - Red Hat 9.

Minimum 25 years in jail. Why are we so SOFT on this type of crime?
That's what I do. You just have to be diligent about updating your virus scan and running it.
I also keep my security levels high. Because of that, I never get pop-up ads. Ever.
Win98 is "as or more stable" than XP? What are you smoking?

I'd like to know as well. It seems the governemnt doesn't seem to want to track these people down. It's so much easier for them to attack people for paper crimes like making a mistake on their taxes or for violation of one of the millions of 'regulations' they require us to follow.
Ya, I'm microsoft-free as well. I post these for the complacent.
