This is good news for some, but I have to report that factory hiring is still the same here in Western North Carolina: Zero.

Every single factory in my county closed down last year. Ecusta (Union strike), Coats American (moved to Mexico), Dupont (used to make X-ray film).

Even expanding the search to surrounding counties, Schnidier [sp?] in Asheville closed down, and Bussman in Black Mountain closed down. There are still a few factories within a 100 mile radius, but NOT ONE is hiring.

People are paid what the skill is worth. Yes it was more 20 years ago, or perhaps it was too much. If companies could not fill the positions at $8 an hour, then they would pay more or go out of business. A business is in business to make money period. They do not exist to over pay people so that they can do whatever. You have to keep upgrading your job skills if you want to paid more. No one said its an easy thing to do.

in 1984, WENDYS was paying $8.25 for burger flipping!

It is the same wage as today.

In fact, to start at Stop&Shop, it is $7.50 to work in the deli.

I am a degreed engineer, and the only job I was offered so far since the last layoff 3 weeks ago is the deli for 25 hours a week at $8.25

I might as well go bankrupt, but even still, I wont have enough money to pay rent!

The median wage has remained relatively unchanged since 1983. Must just be a local phenomena in your area. Median wage, 1983-2002.

I am not sure if this is up your alley but have you looked into Oak Ridge, TN? If you look up some of the individual facilities they are hiring engineers in certain fields.

But I understand what you are saying.

The yearlong stretch of strong growth helped power the ISM's employment index to 61.9 in May -- the highest since April 1973 -- from 57.8 the prior month. But after shedding nearly 3 million jobs over more than three years, the factory sector has a long way to go to recover all the jobs lost.

Here it is. Median wages have actually risen by about $4K/yr since 1983....using 2001 dollars.

Many of those are copies of the same job, the BELCAN/Navigant

Adecco wants a specific Engineer, I have aplied to almost all f these

the optical one through Monroe I am not qualified for, they want someone who has experience in optics

The PE ones in bridgeport are more Construction, I am machine design

Some are manufacturing engineering, and no one trains anymore

all the time, I can do PRO/E, AUTOCAD/SoLIDWORKS/CADKEY but I only have an AS with 6 years experience with 15 years experience as a machine mechanic/test rig operator

Many of the BELCAN jobs, and Adecco/Arnold Hannifin are PRatt&Whitney jobs that have been listed for 2 years now, I have had my name in there all this time, no interviews, even the engineering aide positions, no bites.

Spherion is a radio tower/Cell Phone company in Meriden, I interviewed, came in 2nd place, the remaining openings are electical engineering/RF tower design, the temp agencies wont submit me, I already directly applied for several positions there.

The ones in Windsor Locks are Hamilton Sundstrand, they want a BS with UNIGRAPHICS and I never did that, seems all the rest of the drafting softwares are inconsequential and they wont train, classes are either at Central Ct St Col for over $1K, and I cannot afford it, the center for teaching it is in MAss near Boston, I am hoping the state will pay for re-training this summer while I am on unemployment.

Perkn elmer has a couple openings, I applied but they are paying only $15 an hour for someone to train to be a supervisor, and that is 40 miles each way for me, that is over $260 in gas a month! And my truck is 18 yars old, I cant do that and take the cut in pay like that and expect to pay bills.

If you want to take an accurate poll, call the temp agencies and ask them how many resumes they receive compared to how they match the job description. I am listed with over 50 state agencies and outside state agencies and I speak to them all the time. There are an average of 500 resumes for every position posted, including engineering.

I know, 5 drafting languages, 15 years experience as a machine mechanic and 6 years experience as a designer/Draftsman isnt enough experience or ability to do design work...on small sheet metal parts...

Sorry, but some people just repeat mantras that make no sense to those of us actually out there doing the work.

Most engineers here will notice the common thread about most of the jobs that you posted: they're defense jobs, which are funded by taxes. Note that the administration is borrowing heavily to spend those dollars.

Connecticut's major employers over the years in manufacturing of that sort has been General Dynamics' Electric Boat Division (no commercial customers), Sikorsky Helicopters (hardly any commercial customers), and Pratt/Whitney America Aircraft Engines group (which does have commercial business, primarily improvements and upgrades to the JT-9, but has been doing a lot of government development work lately that used to go to Vero Beach).

If "manufacturing" is going anywhere in the U.S., it's mostly based on building either government products, or building ITARS protected commerical (i.e., dual use) products.

Everything else that can be built elsewhere and imported back into the country tariff free will be because if it isn't, someone else will do it and undercut you in price. Since the U.S. provides little protection for it's own goods, and in fact subsidizes the foreign goods, the end result is that commerical production will usually be forced to go offshore.

Want a job? Get a clearance, and lobby the Congress to spend money in your district. It's the American way. Just ask Boeing/LockMart/GD/Raytheon/Textron.

And if someone who was doing those jobs 15 years ago hasn't increased their marketable skill set in the past 15 years, then they have locked themselves into their situation, not the economy, and certainly not President Bush.

. You are either coming in this arguement late or you arent paying attention.

I got my degree in 93, started engineering in 95, got laid off from Engineering in 2001, havent had ANY steady work since!

Actually, I havent had any steady work since 99! The telecom company I stared with in 99 collapsed almost in 2001. They are still a ghost town in manufacturing, but they sure opened up a company in Ireland that is booming!

Well, this is certainly depressing news... for the Kerry camp.

Well, the economy may be doing well but it isn't like it's because of anything Bush has done. And besides, look at those gas prices! Inflation!
