A little Seneca Indian blood helps, too. My dad's side.

If you have not served, then you have not earnd a thing! It has been given to you!

By the way, when you volunteer for the military, you do get to choose your mission. It is called a MOS or Military Occupational Specialty. You even get to choose where you are stationed to some extent when you tell your superiors your top three preferences for your next post. However, you do not get to choose when you get deployed. The enemy does that for you.

A. Currently the sons of the prosperous by and large do not serve. Under the current system, the daughters of the poor serve instead.

B. That is not fair.

C. Life is not fair.

You really think that our greatest threat to liberty is here at home???

If you've got a free month or two, have a look at the federal register some time. When you're done with that, you've got state, local and city ordinances.

All total there is harldly a human activity left in the US that isn't highly regulated or outright prohibited. Indeed, this country today pales in comparison to the liberty enjoyed at the time of the founding, or even a scant 50 years ago.

Need an example? This week our government is boasting nationwide that it will pull you over and give you a ticket for not wearing your seltbelt. Can Osama do that to you?

And further attacks on our liberty and privacy, even utterly unrelated to terrorism are a daily occcurance. Liberty is in a free fall. At this rate even third world countries will be more free than the US, simply because they lack the recourses necessary to impose a surveillance/police state.

If you have nothing to hide, what are you worried about?

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. A simple look at history will show what happens when too much power is given to government, even in our own country. The presence of the Bill of Rights and indeed the entire design of our Constitution stands in direct opposition to your statement. Our founders knew first hand the effects of excessive government. And we will know their suffering should we not heed their teachings.

While Al Queda etc.. may possess the ability to kill limited amounts of Americans and cause economic damage (yes that needs to be fought) they can never enact a single law here or ever take our liberty by force. They currently cannot restrict your speech or assembly, or take your gun or search you without cause. And they will never in a thousand years be able to do so by force alone.

And yet, on March 11th, 2004, multiple bombs detonated in Spain, on the eve of their election cycle, and the panicking sheep voted out the government who joined the Coalition.

Al-Qaeda proved that, through violence, they can alter the course of free elections, extort a people to overthrow a government, and place into power a regime which will restrict personal liberty, as only Socialism can.

Do you truly think that, given the chance, al-Qaeda might not wish to aid Socialism in America back into power, re-installing them for who knows how many years??

A Socialist government WILL take your gun, WILL restrict your speech, and WILL enact laws to take your liberty. And al-Qaeda will support them, by blood and fire.

The Bosnia mission is winding down at last. Those stationed in Africa are now there to hunt the Wahabbis full-time. And our "noble allies", France/Germany/Spain, are twisting their pantaloons because our bases are being vacated.

Glad to hear it.

The "vile draft" the thread poster talks about is only a Socialist ploy tailored for maximum anti-Bush political damage.

Of interest to me is that these conscription bills are being introduced by some of the most socialist democrats. They even would have people perform "community service" (read: slave labor) as well. And conservatives somehow think this is a good idea?

Seat belts??? Um, I believe that law is there because too many people are stupid enough not to wear them. Another case of the government protecting it's people.

I don't believe that there is absolute power here. In fact, if memory serves correctly, there are several steps that must be taken for the government to "spy" on you. Of course, the first is that you need to do something that makes them suspicious.

Careful - you're toying with the words from the Good Book there -- or do you not recognize that??

I recognize it. However bible quotes aren't a sound basis for foreign policy. Especially at the expense of a draft.

And how, pray tell, did you earn the right to be born into this privileged place that we call America?

My ancestors worked to get here, then they worked to earn a living here. Many of them served in the military as well.

Here is where, IMHO, you run yourself in circles. The preamble to the constitution states that one of the main purposes of the federal government is to "Provide for the common defense." The government is set up to do that. If the way to provide for that defense - and I believe going after terrorists IS defending our country whether they be in South Korea or Iraq or Afghanistan or Timbuktu - is to institute a draft, how can you say that it is government overstepping it's bounds as set up in the Constitution or Bill of Rights. I just don't see it.

you do not get to choose when you get deployed

That is why I would not join.

The enemy does that for you.

The president does that for you. And given their atrocious track record of international adventurism and sticking our nose where it doesn't belong. I didn't trust their judgement. Still don't.

Let me make this understood:

The draft bills are nothing more than political leverage. They hope that The Sheep will only yell at GWB, accusing HIM of bringing back the draft.

There has been no conscription in this country for two generations. There are no plans to start. The volunteer rates for the last two years have exceeded even the most optimistic dreams of recruiters everywhere.

Every soldier has wanted to step forward for this war. The infinitesmal few who have their "Come to Allah/Lenin" moments are swarmed by the presstitutes, and they make it sound as if the whole army is in revolt.

It all boils down to a single issue, a single platform: "I HATE GEORGE BUSH!!!" And that's all there ever is, or was, to any Democrat issue.
