"Mejia Godoy said his son "was prepared for this and whatever came, because he took up this challenge with all the firmness and dignity of his Nicaraguan heart."
There really should not be anyone in the service who does not have an "American heart" Anyone with foreign body parts should be sent back to where their heart is. How do these jerks get into our country?
I'd allow non-citizens to enlist in the military and work themselves up to E-2. But there's no way a non-citizen should become a NCO. Service in the military should, of course, ease their way into becoming citizens.
I do have some slight sympathy for the true conscientious objector. In this case Sgt. Mejia should have reported for duty, declared his conscientious objector status, taken Medic (or whatever) training and put his unarmed assets out in the field to tend the wounded. Instead he hid out until the heat got too hot. His conviction is well deserved.
Why does everyone paint these non citizen soldiers with the same brush? In a USAF class, I met one one from Belize. Granted this is anecdotal as he was the only one I ever met while in the service. He was further to the right than I am. I was impressed.
Because, in the overwhelming number of cases, that perspective is dead-on accurate.
I, too, in my 20 years in uniform, have seen the same thing: foreign-born troops with more loyalty to the mother land than to America.
I've also seen black American troops that despise this country, but yet for some reason, don't want to go back to the mother land hell-hole they embrace; can't fathom that logic...
But, like you, HGC, I've also known soldiers from foreign shores, who are fiercely loyal and devoted to America. They're the ones who have had to fight and risk life/limb/all to get here. And they do just fine.
-"Mejia Godoy said his son "was prepared for this and whatever came, because he took up this challenge with all the firmness and dignity of his Nicaraguan heart."-
Firmness and dignity would've been exhibited by sticking to the rules and going through the process of objection instead of running away, but it appears the lad was fairly taught his more undignified behaviors by the father.
Agreed. Desertion is honorable?
I too am upset over it....He shoulda been shot!
Please post your source for this charge. There are thousands in the service and I have known quite a few in my years. Never knew one that was not an outstanding soldier.
>I'd allow non-citizens to enlist in the military and work themselves up to E-2. But there's no way a non-citizen should become a NCO. Service in the military should, of course, ease their way into becoming citizens.
SF was formed almost exclusively by former Wermacht troops, with Poles, Checks, Hungarians, etc. joining later.
IMHO, "conscientious objector" status should be sought and obtained PRIOR to service, even more so by volunteers.
Sounds like anecdotal evidence to me.
Same as mine, and yours.
You're the one who charged that "in the overwhelming number of cases". I simply want to know the source for that. Yes mine is anecdotal, but I am only referring to those I have known. Again, what is your source. Did you meet the overwhelming number of alien servicemen?
Is there an award for this?
The whole thing doesnt make sense. Why would the son of this leftist join our military in the first place. and he did join he wasnt drafted. If he joined he wasnt a conscientious objector when he joined. I would suppose he joined because the life he was living wasnt as good as the life in the military , but when the life in the military became hazardous he wanted out. He deserted he goes to jail. End of story. Too bad we cant figure a way to put his dad in the next cell.
This guy is full of bs. His son is a deserter and is being punished for it. That's all that needs to be said.
Sorry Sarge, but it's hard to misunderstand what you said:
Because, in the overwhelming number of cases, that perspective is dead-on accurate.
As I reread everything you were responding to the "broad brush" concern.
Don't mean to be adversarial, but when someone refers to the overwhelming number of cases of legal alien servicemen, it gets my dander up. My anecdotal evidence was based solely on my personal experiences, and of course did not extend to the thousands that are active in the service. I simply wanted a source for your statement concerning the overwhelming number of cases. Have a good day.
Ahrgh, not all my post got posted. Lead finger on the mouse...
