It has always been EXTREMELY bad policy to mess with these lads. My dad was with the old 79th Camerons, but I give the Argylls their due!
I think this is so unfair............
I have a feeling that this will change the way the towels in the south look at the GB troops in some fundamental way. Like they disrespect us somewhat for fighting in our stand-off, air-strike manner and don't think we've the belly for the wet work, up close and personal. "Nee-w they kneeew, don' F wi'us laddie, weeee'l kipper 'ye"
The rags are not too brave when faced with cold steel.
Highland infantry battalion has an active and full time Pipe Band, made up of soldiers with a specialist machine gun role.
"Don't cha think ya better...rephrase that laddie?" Mr Scott
I agree. The Scots should have had one hand tied behind their backs to even out the playing field. :)
I admire the Highlanders for pulling this off, but in the age of automatic weapons, I wouldn't make this a standard battle tactic. Even the dumbest opponent will counter it.
As a last resort, and as a one-shot deal, it was magnificent.
It doesn't bother me at all that the enemy fighters regard the US as cowards for our stand-off killing methods. What was it that Patton said?
All they needed was to play a few tunes on the bagpipes, and the muslime scum would have scurried away.
Bump - to show my two sons after school.
God bless the Scots.
Fletcher J
Bagpipes and Scots have been scaring the enemy for generations. Once a year they parade through my church (Presbyterian, naturally). When the pipe organ joins in, it makes your hair stand on end. Awesome!
Patton said, "We're gonna hold the enemy by the nose and kick him in the ass." But I think that even the great Patton would have preferred just gunning them down.
BRAVO ZULU to the Scots, a Scottish Regiment fought their way into a Marine encirclement, in the Korean War, to stand with the Marines. Col Drysdale led them in and he and his lads had guts aplenty. We celebrate it to this day with the Commandant/C.O. sending one another telegrams wishing one another's service well.
OK, why were any of the enemy allowed to run off? No backup requested? No backup available? How many got away to fight again?
The final spoken lines of Braveheart come to mind:
"They fought like Warrior Poets."
They fought like Scotsmen."
One of our fighting men in Iraq was on Rush yesterday. He came right out and called his enemies cowards. Who only know ambushes and other sneaky tactics
Bayonets can only reach so far. Believe me, this tale will be retold around the camel dung fires for a long-time. The Muslo-fascists will be a bit tardy in attacking the Scots again.
BTW, the raggies have a habit of running off. Yom Kippur War. Gulf War Pt 1, Pt 2. They are like roaches, you can only stomp/spray so many at a time!
I'm currently listening to the Dropkick Murphys redition of Amazing Grace with bagpipes and guitars...awesome.
bump to read later.
Spot on. But this time the "Orkin Man" wore a kilt! God bless 'em, and keep up the splendid work, fellows.
I think the Patton quote that serves this one better is:
You don't win a war by dying for your country, you win by making the other S.O.B. die for HIS country.
