This is not a significant find. It would take the uncovering of a substantial amount of WMDs before I begin to celebrate. 1 shell does not vindicate President Bush - unfortunately it only serves to highlight a huge failure to produce that which we were certain Saddam had. Before anyone starts flaming me - I am a staunch supporter of Bush and will vote for him in the next election. But I personally cannot overlook the reasons we went to war and the importance of the existence of WMD to that cause. While the outcome has been fantastic - I still think that that the absence of significant stockpiles of WMD is a black eye on the President to say the least. And this lone shell, even if it has Sarin in it, highlights that liability.

Probably,
Coverage in newspaper here is for the most part what they call "objective". After the experiance Germany made during the Nazi regime, newspaper is by and large less partisan than in any other country i have lived. Allthough the opinion and editorial pages bring about political statements.
Yet all papers usually report all the news in an objective way, meaning that they report it without initial judgement. Judgement is reserved to the opinion pages.
The mustard gas found has also been reported about two weeks ago in television as well as in papers...

I wish ours would report the news without their own opinions of it.

Just the facts. That's all we need.

Sounds like your media is pretty good. Where are you?

You might be right on that, I am not an expert in that field, so I did not judge it. I merely repeated what Kimmit said.

Right now in Germany...
But I usually read German, Dutch and British press anf freerepublic to get a more "conservative" picture. since many articles show up here.
NewYorkTimes has cooperations with a German newspaper so I get a good overview of the "liberal" US press as well.

I agree with most of your comment, but remember there is a whole bunch of Bush haters who vehemently insisted that there were ABSOLUTELY!!! no wmds in Iraq and NEVER WERE!!! I actually had a Bush-hating friend of mine tell me that with a straight face. He would not admit that Hussein ever had any or ever used them. So just finding these two shells completely refutes their insipid argument. They would have been better off stating that while Hussein had them, he would never use them against us. This discovery makes them look like fools...which most of them are even if some are close friends.

Have always believed Saddam had them and had plenty of time to send most to Syria. They are just now making their way back with the terrorists. Mistake to use them now. It will just show President Bush was right all along. Never mind that the rest of the world knew it too. That doesn't fit the lib agenda to get Bush no matter what.

"Not to worry...the stories are already out there that we were planting WMD's throughout Iraq in order to save face."

I guess this means that tin foil hats will be the rage at the Dimocrat convention!

Don't forget about this other recent story as well:

Six die as suspicions of anthrax mount in northern city (Iraq) iraq press ^ | 5/12/04

Posted on 05/12/2004 9:01:55 PM EDT by knak

Mosul, Iraq Press, May 11, 2004 –Six people have died and many other are taken ill due to a disease whose symptoms doctors say resemble those caused by anthrax, according to hospital sources.

The sources, refusing to be named, said doctors in the Republican Hospital, the largest medical center in northern Iraq, suspect that the victims were exposed to anthrax.

They said a whole wing of the sprawling hospital has been cordoned off as doctors fear the disease might spread to other patients.

The sources said the doctors suspect that a patient brought to hospital two weeks ago was the cause of the disease. Anthrax spreads quickly and the six patients were said to have caught the disease as they were being treated for other ailments in the hospital.

The patient who the doctors believe brought the anthrax was a shepherd and had already died, the sources said. The hospital lacks means to battle the deadly disease. But the medical staff and support personnel have already been inoculated against anthrax, they said.

There is much confusion in the hospital, the sources said. Hospital officials have declined comment and would not go into details when asked about the causes of the latest deaths.

Iraq had confirmed that it made anthrax in the 1980s along with other germ warfare agents. The former regime produced weapons-grade dry anthrax powder which it claimed to have unilaterally destroyed.

UN weapons inspectors failed to get conclusive evidence that Iraq had scrapped its biological warfare program on its own. US-led weapons experts have so far failed to uncover any germ warfare agents.

This was a surface burst of the W-54 Davy Crockett warhead, which was suspended three feet above the ground on cables. The plutonium warhead's diameter was just short of 11 inches, was over 15 inches long, and weighed 50 pounds.

50 pounds... sweet....

I am serious when I say this. Even though they exist, they do not exist until it is declared that they exist on the front page of the Washington Post or declared by Peter Jennings on ABC World News Tonight. Both will will ingnore or minimize their existence for as long as is humanly possible unless the find is very, very big. It is very bad news for the press if WMD are found.

I think it's really cool that we fought a war to get WMD into the hands of terrorists.

That's because we waited 12 years & 17 resolutions to get permission from the U.N. to stop Saddam. This gave Saddam too much time & warning to sell wmd.

THE U.N. HAS GOT TO GO!!
