Perhaps the Klebolds are confusing guilt and responsibility.
They are correct in their assertion that they are guiltless of complicity in the crimes of their son.
The young man must answer for his own crimes.
However, as parents, it appears they failed in their responsibility toward him.
I say "appears" because I do not know all the circumstances surrounding his life, but clearly the young man was emotionally disturbed, a fact of which his parents, if anyone, should have been aware.

My own 7 yo son had his first experience this year with a bully. He did the "correct" thing and told the teacher. No action was taken. The second time he had a run in with this other kid he bypassed the teacher and went to the principal, on his own. No action was taken. The third time this other kid pushed him I received a call from the principal. Apparently my son was in her office for being "too aggressive". I immediately went to the school and had a "heart to heart" with her about the teacher's lack of intervention and her own lack of action when my son complained to them. I told her that because my son had taken the appropriate route and gone to those who were in charge and because those in charge had failed to remedy the situation that I had given him permission to take care of the problem. I told her that she and Mason's teacher had failed him and that they had betrayed his trust in their "system" by doing so. I also told her that if she wished to pursue the matter that I would go to the board and file a formal complaint against her and the teacher. My son was not disciplined.
Since then I have heard of at least three other kids being bullied by this same child. This little brat has even exposed himself and went so far as to rub his penis on one little boy in the restroom during a potty break. Note that this kid had also exposed himself to my son as well and no action was taken when my son told on him.
While my son was having a hard time with this kid and trying to do the right thing I noticed his frustration level was up, he had a stomach ache every morning and didn't want to go to school, was angry a lot and so on. Since he took care of the problem himself with a solid right punch to the other kid's jaw that put the little devil TreShawn on his rear end, his confidence has been restored and his other "symptoms" have disappeared. He also has had no more problems with this bully.
BTW, my son wants to be a cop too, lol. He is costing me a fortune in cap guns and plastic handcuffs and I am tired of being "arrested" every day.

Cluelessness and denial can be such comforting things . . . to a point, for a while.

People who have nothing to apologize for should not be goaded, coerced, and browbeaten into apologizing for apologizings sake.
I'm sorry you cannot understand that.
